Cupcake

Most of you know that I have never shyed away from controverseal subjects so here goes;

In the great scheme of dessert goods where do cupcakes fit? Do you prefer them over cookies or cake? Or are they some distant third, a baked good only for those not proficient in making real cakes or for children's parties because of the ease of eating them?

Ronzo 07-25-2007 08:19 AM

You're a bonafide goofball... know that?:slaphappy

Cupcake is an inferior

baked good.

rgcraig 07-25-2007 08:48 AM

Cupcakes are just mini cakes and should be considered in the cake category!

They are easier to eat and can be presented in a very unique way.

Also, each bite has icing whereas with a piece of cake that is not always true.

Most people over-bake cupcakes making them too dry (I don't).

I never liked cupcakes much and just thought of them as juvenile food, UNTIL I went to this Buttercup Bakery on 2nd Ave. in NY City, where they specialize in them. They have German Chocolate cupcakes, Carrot Cake cupcakes, Spice Cake Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Icing, etc. etc. Definitely not child's fare and totally changed my perception!!!

Exactly! Any cake can be made as cupcakes!

Come on Bro!

We'll fry bacon and ham. She makes homemade biscuits and gravy too.

We'll save the cupcakes for dessert.

Of course, we're gonna need to ignore that whole diet thing!

Here in Arizona the local Safeway grocery store bakes these incredible carrot cake muffins....they have a very small dallop of cream cheese icing on the top.......and then you bite into them and they have actually injected the icing into the center and the dollop on the top is just the beginning...:thebunny of a very decadent muffin.

Now that sounds like a muffin I could eat - and enjoy!! :donuts

I believe that cupcakes are the compromising slippery slope in the baked goods world. They deviate from the original "traditional" recipe for the sheer enjoyment of self. Just because they are faster, have those fancy sprinkles and curvaceous dollops of cream, they aren't as hearty as a home-made loaf of white bread, which takes time, effort, and just the right climate to reach it's potential.
I remember going into a bakery, where I saw one of these daintily decorated treats...and I said..."Ah yes, Con-fection, I know you, I have seen you before"!
I passed it on by and reached for a loaf of two day old bread and went on my way knowing that I had been in the valley of decision...once again conquering the need for change, new direction, and bliss for my palate.

I bit into my crusty, dry, old bread...and wept.

He he! Can you tell I had me a Starbucks??

commonsense 07-25-2007 08:17 PM

I would have classified cupcakes as a great treat for kids or taking to a work pot luck, but.........

Last month I went to my dept managers' wedding and :dancing, low and behold I saw a most unique and yet lovely (and tasty) Wedding Cake.
There was a multileveled base done in steps and covered in the wedding colors.
Every level was covered by cupcakes. The cupcakes had a small design on each top using icing in the wedding colors. The result was a neat cake that was easy to serve, looked wonderful and didn't dry out. The top tier was a tiny round cake with the bride/groom statuette. (they used a buttercream frosting to ice them)
For the budget minded, it was very classy and yet affordable.

What a great idea! I've seen a Krispy Kreme cake, but not a cupcake one!

Wow! This sounds amazing. My favorite cake is carrot cake but it has to be moist.

My main dislike of most cupcakes is their dryness.

It sounds like this grocery store bakery has done the impossible and made moist carrot cake cupcakes. I wish I had one right now!

Pressing-On 07-25-2007 11:43 PM

I hate Red Velvet Cake that isn't perfectly moist. The Cream Cheese icing must be perfect!

If you don't tell a soul and you put 1/4 cup mayo to any regular recipe - you will have the most moist cake of all. Don't let anyone see you do it. Cakes must be perfect!!!!!

rgcraig 07-26-2007 07:08 AM

generally it works out well for me.

I cook some ground sausage, then saute some onion, bell pepper and garlic in that then saute some thinly sliced potato until it is just done.

whip up some eggs, add all that to an oven proof pan, put it on the stove until the egg starts to cook, put it in the oven at arount 350 or so unti the egg sets.

yum
