Best Web Hosts?

I am going to be moving the NLC web site from a local host to a host with larger space and speed. I have looked at a number of them and so far, the cheapest with good ratings and BBB ratings is Lunarpages.

Anyone have any better suggestions? I need a lot of space for video & audio streaming.

Space never seems to be the issue really....it's bandwith that matters with streaming from your own site

You're right. So far, even with out local host, we have not had a bandwidth problem. But they are hosting our site for free and when we change from wireless internet to Cable, it won't be fair for me to expect them to continue to host it for free.

GoDaddy.com :thumbsup

As far as I can tell, GoDaddy only works with domain name registration and not hosting (unless they started at some point).

All I know is that at GoDaddy.com, everybody wants to work in marketing.....

Check out the website . . . they do much more than DN registrations now.

Well, lookee here, they DO do hosting now. Actually, they look like pretty good deals so far.

Throw your eyeballs on Lunarpages' site and see if you can locate any warning signs. I know that they have associates who re-sell space, but they still seem to be the most trustworthy of the cheap mega-hosts.

Well just about any service nowadays includes a lot of disk space.

I use Netfirms... www.netfirms.com they host for free with a banner ad. They have a low end package that is only $5 a month and then they have business packages too with stores etc etc...

They have wordpress installed, rubyonrails...PHP...they just recently moved to a technology where you have the benefits of both Windows Server and Linux at the same time

How does it work?
.NET applications are executed natively on a Windows (Server 2003) clustered server grid. Open Source applications (coded in PHP, Ruby, Python, etc.) are executed natively on a Linux server grid. You manage both platforms through a single control panel, FTP or SSH account. Netfirms makes this possible by load balancing HTTP requests to their appropriate server cluster.

Netfirms is an industry leader and innovator in web hosting. Our Unix powered clustered hosting technology powers more than a million websites each and every day. We've worked closely with Microsoft to include the Windows server framework into the mix. The result is an enterprise level hosting platform that brings together the two most popular hosting platforms in the world.

I haven't taken advantage of this since we don't use the business package.

The only thing they don't have like some other hosts is one size fits all templates where you just fill in the blanks...this is for those people that really code their own websites :-)

Some of those coffeecup apps are pretty cool brother. That alone can make making a website there worth while, unless you are already a flash expert and have a zillion apps already under your belt

Praxeas 07-29-2007 03:15 PM

MOW, for what they include in even the cheapest package, it looks pretty good. I can't attest though for server uptime/downtime...only others can report on that that actually use or used this service

ManOfWord 07-29-2007 06:15 PM

Well, I checked with the BBB and found that they have a high rating there. Some of the others, if you do a generic "web hosts" search didn't fare so well.

Lunarpages hosts here in the US and some of the others are off shore, I think.

Praxeas 07-29-2007 06:25 PM

Well let me know if you do. It looks pretty good. I might be up for a server change. Plus I have a friend that wants a couple e-stores she wants me to make and Im looking for a good server with good e-store software already installed

We use www.startlogic.com. We have 3 accounts with them.

300GB of space, 3TB (3000GB) of bandwidth/month at $6.95 a month (for the one year plan - it's $5.95 for the two year plan).

They are dirt cheap.

Their service is refelective of this. Just being honest.

If you don't need to talk to them at all, they're great.

If you do... eh... not so much.

Still... they're dirt cheap.

I use www.mediatemple.com. They are a little pricier @ $20/month. Package includes plenty of everything, and they have one-click installs of wordpress and a couple of others. They have very good customer service and some big name clients.

Also, you can host lots of domains with one account. I use godaddy as my registrar.
