Minneapolis Crisis Going On Right Now - Pray (IH35 Bridge Collapse)

FOX news just broke in with live video of a major interstate bridge collapse on IH35 over the Mississippi river in Minneapolis.

People and cars are in the water. People are in the water swimming needing to be rescued.

Big semi's are in the water also and some vehicles are on fire. This is a terrible tragedy.

CC1 08-01-2007 05:37 PM

The helicopter shot just zoomed out and it is a huge section of interstate both directions that has collapsed. Probably hundreds and hundreds of feet long. Some over ground and some over water.

Looks like this section was probably 30-50 feet above ground and water.

Saying now that many pedestrians and bike riders were also on the bridge.

Wife says something just blew up on the bridge.

No rescue vehicles seen yet.

CC1 08-01-2007 05:46 PM

If you have FOX News channel turn it out. The live footage is unbelievable. Cars tangled in the bridges broken structure and others in the water.

There is a school bus thank heaven on what appears a solid piece that collapsed between the two tangled ends. Hopefully any kids on it got off ok.

The semi truck is still burning.

CC1 08-01-2007 05:48 PM

It appears that a total of four or five spans of the bridge have either fallen or twisted and collapsed. We are talking hundreds of feet of bridge.

There is a report that the school bus had 20 or 30 kids on it and they are safe.

It looks like a bridge that was either bombed or in an earthquake.

Sandra 08-01-2007 06:00 PM

Thank God, the kids on the school bus are ok with minor injuries. Deserving of much prayer.

The Dean 08-01-2007 06:01 PM

How horrible... 50 cars according to XM Radio are 'into' the water.

tamor 08-01-2007 06:05 PM

Oh my gosh. It's awful. I read this and told Jon to turn it on. I can't imagine the horror of seeing that live.

HeavenlyOne 08-01-2007 06:06 PM

Wow, that is really something. They are saying it wasn't an earthquake now, but have no idea what caused it at this time.

Sandra 08-01-2007 06:13 PM

Someone added to my post...this forum is getting spooky!

Are there any suggestions that this may have been a terrorist act?

Homeland Security says they have no reason to believe it is but it will be interesting to see.

Against that idea is the fact that so far the terrorists have chosen symbolic targets for terrorism. NYC and the WTC was a center of commerce for the USA and DC the center of government.

As far as I know Minneapolis is the center of NOTHING.

However my Marine son who has seen many things blown up including bridges says it looks to him like detonations caused the collapse based on the aerial footage. That is just speculation though. Although one eye witness just said she first saw stuff flying up in the air and then after that the bridge collapsed.

Tina 08-01-2007 06:37 PM

CC1, Thanks for keeping this thread updated with what is going on.

Praying for all involved....

CC1 08-01-2007 06:42 PM

There is at least one fatality but I would be very surprised if there are not quite a few more.

Part of the bridge collapsed onto a train below. So far looks like just freight cars. I don't see any passenger cars in the train.

The big question no one knows is how many cars are actually under the water out of sight.

That's what I was thinking earlier. They can't know how many have gone down and not come up yet. So therefore they wouldn't have an accurate count of how many are trapped and dead in cars.

Any one on AFF live in the area of the bridge?

Tina 08-01-2007 06:48 PM

I'm talking to a friend in that area now on IM. He said his niece is missing. No one can reach her by cellphone. She goes to school at U of M, and crosses that bridge about 6pm every day... He said that this happened around 6:15..

I'm praying for her safety, Tina. Let us know what they find out.

Esther 08-01-2007 06:51 PM

CNN just confirmed 3 are dead.

Possibly 50-100 cars in the water.

A semi was on fire and they are putting it out. It is torn in half.

Too add to the horror of this, is they are losing daylight and weather is on its way.

The official said it is the perfect storm for them.

It was rush hour.

The only good news it they believe many lanes were closed due to construction.

Also they is a major baseball game tonight and many of the commuters may have been on their way to the game as well.

Horrible situation!

Medtronic (where I work) headquaters is located in Minneapolis - I'm anxious to hear if everyone is okay there - several thousand people work there, so chances are good someone could have been on that bridge.

Prax... lighten up... I am not trivializing anything except maybe the demonizing of the box.

Oh how terrible. Let's pray she is okay and that it's just that her cell phone is gone.

Or you can pull up Foxnews on your computer - - what's the difference?

Besides, you have more than enough air that you can let some out and still be well inflated after watching for several hours.

Not to trivialize of course.

Surely not... is this the convergence of technology that I hear so much about?:)

Im a pretty light person when the time is appropriate. If this was Chan the board would be all over him.... I think it's out of place myself and trivializes the tragic event and even gets us off topic. That's my opinion

I am not FULL of hot air... as you know there has to be room for some other substance!:slaphappy

Now let's get back to the matter of genuine concern.. I am sorry for hijacking this thread.... I just couldn't resist a comment.

FOX news said that the construction was completed and that all lanes were open. I also didn't see any evidence that any construction was under way.

I wish I knew what was under that slab in the water....I hope it's just water and not other cars and debris.

If there is any good news, it's that this part of the Mississippi is narrow, thus the bridge isn't that long. Would have been worse if it happened in St. Louis.

I heard on the news an eye witness that said the bridge was shaking and that at the time he felt it there were jackhammers at work....who knows

They just said that cell service is limited to keep the lines open for emergency crews---so I am hoping that's the reason they can't reach her.
