Television

I knew that would get your attention!

To begin with before my ultra con friends start making calls...I DO NOT HAVE OR WANT A TELEVISION. I have been thinking about the postings about Television and other things so I just wanted to add a few thoughts of mine.

So with that said I shall proceed...
Deut 17:14 When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, "Let us set a king over us like all the nations around us," 15 be sure to appoint over you the king the LORD your God chooses. He must be from among your own brothers. Do not place a foreigner over you, one who is not a brother Israelite. 16 The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the LORD has told you, "You are not to go back that way again." 17 He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.

Now...the Bible plainly tells us the dangers of riches... the foolishness of vanity yet Christians have turned out to be all type collectors of art...wearers of name brand clothes...oh! Sister Alvear we drove to tenbuckto, spent the night in the Super Eight to save money and we really got a big discount...When was GOD`S children in the Bible ever concerned about name brands? When did God say we could collect antiques worth thousands and thousands of dollars and say we are rapture ready? Uncontrolled selfishness is a real problem in our church world today.
It is not God that we try to impress, it is our brother...God is not impressed by our foolish spending and our endless shopping sprees....
His entry in Jerusalem the people had a shout down...4 times the gospels mention this fact...yet Jesus wept and said, “ye knew not the day of your visitation...”

Not having a television does not mean we have moved out of Ur and on to another country. Sin begins deep in the heart long before a person is watching sex scenes on a television or pornography on the internet. Dirty jokes have long been laughed at by many that would never be caught watching a television. “As in the water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects man” (Prov. 27:19). Our culture is permeated with sexual images. We must stand guard at all moments.
John and not loud mouthed Peter but John...quite by nature...loving said these words, “love not the world neither the THINGS that are in the world...
I ask you, dear one, what are the THINGS in your life? Lay aside every sin and WEIGHT...
What have you gathered for yourself?
God blessed Solomon with great riches, but Solomon allowed that blessing to turn into a danger because he disobediently multiplied silver and gold for himself. Deuteronomy 17:17) states that even a king is not permitted to "greatly increase for himself silver and gold." The reason is given in the Torah (Deuteronomy 17:20): "So that his heart does not become lifted above his brethren."
The sages recognized that very little good can result from a splashy, gaudy lifestyle. On the contrary, it produces envy, suffering, arrogance, dishonesty, and shaming of the impecunious. The Torah teaches us that ostentation is not the true purpose of wealth, helping others is.
Please take note I am not against God blessing anyone but I wonder what do we gain destroying each other?
What about the laws of God that we have not kept? What about a world that perishes and has no idea that Jesus is Lord? What about the 40¨% of Brazil´s children (25 million) that live on the streets? What about the one half of the population of the world that go to bed hungry every night? What about the 440 million people that do not have one sentence of the Bible? One estimate says that 3 billion of the world's population is inaccessible to professional, resident missionaries. Bill Bright said “We have the technology and the money, but the main stumbling block is the lack of prayerful concern on the part of Christians."
Are we guilty of straightening pictures in burning houses?
I am not saying to believe any old way...those that know me personally know that I have convictions and belief´s. I have given the best years of my life on the mission field and OH! that I had another life to give!

I am not against anyone having a nice home, driving a nice car or anything like that. God´s people deserve the best! But I have noticed so many that are drunk on pleasures...relaxation is needful but too much of it becomes a vice. To be drunk on beer or pleasures is all about the same in God´s eyes. No one can serve two masters,” Jesus said to his disciples. However, Christians have spent the greater portion of the past two millenniums apparently trying to prove Jesus wrong. We have told ourselves that we can indeed have both-the things of God and the things of this world.
We want revival and revival will only come when we deny ourselves and follow HIM…
And now I will run to the jungle....ha

Ain't that the truth! My wife lays a sermon on me regularly, and I line right up. :D

Sister Alvear 08-28-2007 10:33 PM

I love you folks...

Devices are as only evil as we make them. Some devices it is better not to have as the Heart is deceitful and who can know it.
However I hope in whatever I do or do not do my spirit and heart is right.

I like to have "things" like everyone else, but I pray that things never have me! I love the blessings of the Lord, but I always hope that I have a heart to give to the Kingdom, even to the point of sacrifice.

Digging4Truth 08-29-2007 07:21 AM

I would imagine that very few of us who have grown up in America would have much ability to be able to properly decipher what is excess.

Of course... excess will tend to be... those that have much more than me.

But I would imagine that the vast majority of us are more bound by things than we would be able to see with our tainted vision.

Sissy 08-29-2007 08:06 AM

Unfortunately, the "TV issue" has taken its toll on the missionaries. Because of many Pastors' focal point has been on GC and Res 4 - the missionaries are having a hard time getting back to the field. They are having to deputize longer because of the lack of support financially and services that have been canceled. It's getting to the point where the "TV issue" is consuming a lot of people...

My dear friend: You are one of the least selfish persons I have ever met. From what I have observed you are given over to God´s work. He who had no place to lay his head seldom requires it of his followers...
It is His good pleasure to bless us...I just think many times in the circles I am in we hear so much of the evils of television but we never hear the evils of riches...the evils of THINGS...
We hear very few sermons on the heart...love, gifts of the spirit, five fold ministry...
You know me I am not one much to go against the tide on a forum but sometimes things bother me...I am worried about the drive for pleasure...the drive to impress...
I hear people say things they do not believe or live in the pulpit just because of peer pressure.
I think if I have God´s spirit in me that spirit will led me...
more later ...lunch time in Brazil...love you.

Sis. Alvear,

I have posted this several times before but it is still just as true as the first time I posted it... Elder CA Nelson used to tell me all the time that "Things and Stuff will put more folks in hell than Whiskey and Snuff!" I still believe him though his body lies in the grave and his soul is with God who gave it awaiting the resurrection.:)

Yes, Sissy the TV issue and a lot of other things..The devil must set back and laugh at grown people acting like children...

My opinion is this: Believe what you feel is right, do what you feel is right but for the sake of souls leave politics alone...
If there is someone and there always will be that cannot be fellowshipped, be nice...and do your kingdom work...why murder...love is the best weapon on earth...
As I said I have never had a television and don´t want one and if I had one I would have no time to watch it and if I had time I have no ideal what is even on television as I have been gone from America 40 years...When I was a kid it was I Love Lucy, 3 stooges and Gunsmoke...ha............yeah a long time ago...
A lot more Pentecostal people will be in hell for lust, greed, envy and strife than for watching I love Lucy...(that is judging from 50 years ago) but the principle is the same.
I know people very close to me that were led astray not over television but because they saw so much "MAFIA" in Pentecost...

Let perscution come, the dollar fail, the banks close, the Muslims become stronger and we will really SEE who has the goods...
While people have millions or bring it on down plenty, we will fuss and fight but when we are staving it will be another story..
Yeah I know most don´t think that could ever happen to good ole America...but watch my words and write it on the covers of your Bible...Proud Amercia will fall...
What then?

OH, how true... Your statement using tainted vision...reminded me when one of our kids was little and we were on deputation and the American pastor took him riding on his lawn mower (tractor) he saw the horses in the beautiful barn...this and that...My son he was about 7 told me, Mother these people are so rich their horse has a house!

This is the prayer request the UPCI sent out. Let us pray for people to recieve the baptism of the Holy Ghost. And no I am not UPCI and yes I pray for them!

August 29, 2007

This week....
Sent and Sacrificing
WNOP's Personal Requests
Sick and Suffering
Streets and Society
Ministry Needs
Mark Your Calendar
Prayer Training Available
2007 Coming Events

More than 1,140 people received the baptism of the Holy Ghost at the 2006 General Conference. This year, we stand boldly before God and request not just an outpouring, but a deluge of spiritual rain. This will only happen when we engage in praying fervent, passionate prayers for the lost in Florida.

In the spirit of Daniel, we will take on the sins of our state and stand in the gap for souls who desperately need the savior. As General Conference 2007 grows closer and we grow more desperate for the revival God has promised, our intercession will intensify, heaven will hear, and God will answer.

This year we will seek the face of God on behalf of our national leadership, our business sessions, our divisions, our districts, our local churches, our pastors, evangelists and most importantly that souls would be saved in an unprecedented measure.

I encourage everyone, young and old, to join the greatest revival Florida has ever seen by committing yourselves to pray. Together we will bombard heaven with focused, kingdom prayers for an outpouring of the Holy Ghost and baptisms and it shall come to pass.

Cyvonne Davy
Florida State Prayer Coordinator
