Kings of Leon on The Tonight Show Tonight

Someone told me Kings of Leon have UPC roots. Is this true?

They are scheduled to be on The Tonight Show tonight according to the NBC website. I know I read something about this group here a while back. Seems sad that they have strayed so far from their roots.

You don't hardly exaggerate either, do ya? :nah

I have an interest in Jay Leno's Garage site on the nbc.com site and I noticed who was going to be on tonight. I did see Fred Thompson's announcement that he is running for president on that website. Is that evil?

Check out Jay's clips of Bentley '31 W.O, 1915 Franklin, 1951 Hudson Hornet and 1953 Hudson Hornet, 1958 Saab 93B, 1931 Duesenburg Murphy Beverly, 1927 Harley-Davidson JD, Jaguar 120, 1927 Model X Duesenberg - and many more. If you have any interest in the vintage, check it out.

Their dad was a Tennessee UPC preacher at one time. Long story, but the parents divorced. The mom Betty is remarried and living in Nashville; attends Christ Church. The dad is backslid, as far as I know. The boys are very bitter, understandably.

I'm really confused. I thought the line of the Kings of Leon went out of existence in 1516 when Charles I formally united the Spainish Kingdoms becoming King Charles I of Spain and Emperor Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire.

FN,

You need to go read some of their song titles and you will KNOW they have UPC roots... their name is thought to be both historical and blasphemous as a reversal of the king of Noel. Some of their Album and song titles are definitely intended to Blaspheme Because of the Times in particular and Pentecost in general. They have an album titled Because of the Times and a song on their Manhood album titled "Holy Roller Novocaine."

Certainly young men who have been wounded and their recovery is quite suspect.

Here is their web site with Bio http://www.kingsofleon.com/biography

If I am not mistaken, the Followills spent some time in the Oklahoma district when I was still there. Their names certainly ring a bell for me.

Coonskinner 09-07-2007 06:38 AM

I knew the family well.

They were nice kids...

Sad deal.

They evangelised for a while in Oklahoma, and then assited Earl Jones in Sperry.

They were going to follow him as pastor there, but there was hair in the butter over something and they left there.

I don't know or care to know the details.

Brother Jones was a fine man, that much I know.

All of us Jones boys are pretty good... :DJ/K

I did love Bro. Jones... he was a fair and just man in every dealing I ever had with him. Georgetta was my girlfriend for about 3 days at a youthcamp when we were in our early teens and then a friend for life. I haven't seen her since a chance encounter in the 80s.

Coonskinner 09-07-2007 06:58 AM

His brother was my pastor for the first 16 years of my life, and while I have heard more gifted preachers I have yet to meet a better man.

Darcie 09-07-2007 07:46 AM

I checked out the lyrics to Holy Roller Novacaine, SCARY!

LadyRev 09-07-2007 08:16 AM

I know the whole family quite well. Its a very sad story indeed.

This is the part that really got me
This could be the night that the moon goes red

Growing up UPC that was a thing all of us young people worried about the moon turning red.

When Mrs. Pianoman and I first got married, we lived in Memphis and assisted my father. The Followell's would come and preach for dad on occasion. Anyway, they were based near Memphis at the time.

One night, Mrs. Pianoman went out with some lady friends to a fancy restaurant in Memphis. This place had a bar area. When she looked into the bar area, she swears that she saw Bro. Followell at the bar drinking a beer!!

We had recently finished a revival with him, so I told her that she was out of her mind! We both laughed it off!

Six monthes later, we found out that Bro. Followell had turned into an alcholholic! We immediately thought about the restaurant run-in! Maybe she DID see him at the bar before everything fell apart for him! SAD!!

Maybe we can get The Kings of Leon for the youth convention in two years.

They'll make Dora the Explorer look like a saint...even in her dress that could not be posted on this site.

Scott Hutchinson 09-07-2007 02:38 PM

Aren't these guys opera singers ?

Uhhuh...

And its just this kind of attitude that helped to get these boys to where they are today. And it will probably keep them there as well.

:whistle

Actually their dad's failure and double life that had more to do with it in the end.

StillStanding 09-07-2007 03:11 PM

They learned to play their instruments during Apostolic alter services, according to their mother!

OK here's the question for whatever reason folks have fallen, how are we helping restore people back to the Father's house ?

NLYP 09-07-2007 03:28 PM

From the webiste...
To that end, Because Of The Times (the title refers to an annual preachers' conference the boys attended growing up) contains Kings of Leon's first-ever album track that clocks in at longer than five minutes ("Knocked Up"), the first song with vocal effects ("On Call"), and the first one you could verifiably call an arena-rock anthem ("Black Thumbnail"). Then there's the breakneck "McFearless," the chiming "Ragoo," the scuzzy "Charmer," and the waltzing "The Runner" - a song so pretty, it's ........ near a lullaby. "I can sing pretty if I want to sing pretty," says Caleb, whose slurry Southern cadences were once a hallmark of the band's sound.

Their dad preached often at the church I attended in Millington TN. Later, they lived in Millington. I spent time in their home. Later still, they pastored a church a few miles outside of Millington. The oldest boys attended the Millington church school.

While their dad was a major factor, it wasn't only his "double" life that caused the problems. Theres more to the story than just dad.

This might figure in, too, but the name Leon is a family name - and, I believe, their father's middle name. I think that's where the name comes from.

I new some folks from Millington church way back in the early 80s. Donna was the wife's name but for the life of me I can't remember the young man's name. They lived in Sulphur LA for a period of time before moving back to Millington. He was a budding preacher I think.

Do you know the couple I am talking about? He was about 6' and slim with dark hair and she was a petite young lady with light brown/blondish hair (I think) time erodes the memory.

Is it Donna and John Columbus? If so, they are members of our church here in Jackson now. He has recently pastored Huntingdon UPC until they came to us. They have two grown daughters, one of which comes often too. If this is who you're taking about, she is the aunt of the Kings of Leon (Betty's sister).

berkeley 09-08-2007 12:53 AM

K.O.L.

Can't believe they were brought up again... interesting timing.. I have placed an order for B.O.T.T. a few days ago.

That is indeed them... How are they doing?

We really thought the world of them when we went to church together.

Of course I no longer am married to that wife but I am sure they will remember me as the really young guy with white hair from Sulphur.

Thanks for this info; I would love to hear from them.

It is hard to believe I was preaching a revival so close to Huntingdon in May and didn't know they were in the area. Wish I had known.

Well, they were already gone from there by then. They've probably been at our church about a year, I guess. They are awesome people! Their two daughters live closeby and they have one grandson named Brock. Sometimes I think John misses pastoring, but I don't know what the future holds for them. They love our church though! That gives you another reason to stop by Jackson sometime and visit our church.

I know where HWY.45 is myself.

Re: Kings of Leon on The Tonight Show Tonight

Leon is their grandfather. I went to church with their cousin, a lady (pastor's wife in MO now) from Bro. Zuniga's church (Jerry Holland was pastor when she was there I believe) in TN. They need prayer, I'll leave it at that.

houston 06-07-2012 01:34 PM

As much prayer as they needed 5 yrs ago!
