The Oklahoma thread.....

I have traveled all over the United States and Europe, but nothing feels like home except Oklahoma...where the wind comes sweeping down the plains...

The purpose of this thread is to allow all of the current and former "Okies" to come together and speak about the motherland....God's Country...the great State of Oklahoma!!

(all non Okies......you are not allowed to post....all wannabe Okies..feel free)

hehe

Oklahoma Facts:

1-Oklahoma has more man-made lakes than any other state, with over one million surface acres of water and 2,000 more miles of shoreline than the Atlantic and Gulf coasts combined.

2-On April 22, 1889, the first day homesteading was permitted, 50,000 people swarmed into the area. Those who tried to beat the noon starting gun were called Sooners. Hence the state's nickname.

3-Oklahoma's four mountain ranges include the Ouachitas, Arbuckles, Wichitas and the Kiami.

4-Oklahoma radio.. WKY was the first radio station transmitting from west of the Mississippi River.

5-Bob Dunn a musician from Beggs invented the first electric guitar 1935.

6-Boise City, Oklahoma was the only city in the United States to be bombed during World War II. On Monday night, July 5, 1943, at approximately 12:30 a.m., a B-17 Bomber based at Dalhart Army Air Base (50 miles to the south of Boise City) dropped six practice bombs on the sleeping town.

7-The world's first installed parking meter was in Oklahoma City, on July 16, 1935. Carl C. Magee, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is generally credited with originating the parking meter. He filed for a patent for a "coin controlled parking meter" on May 13, 1935.

8-Oklahoma is home to a large number of Country Music singers...Reba McIntire, Toby Keith, Garth Brooks, Brooks and Dunn, Vince Gill, Blake Shelton, Carrie Underwood, ....just to name a few!!

9-Forests cover approximately 24 percent of Oklahoma.

10-Oklahoma's two most populous cities are Oklahoma City, with 463,201 residents, and Tulsa with 374,851. The next largest cities are Norman, with a population of 87,290 and Lawton, which has 86,028 people.

Besides the above....the people are just plains NICE!!

God Bless

(and no negative Okie comments please)

hehe

I just moved to Oklahoma last year and I do agree with the statement that the people are just nice!

What Is That?

A young man who left his home in Texas at an early age, finally purchased his own ranch in Oklahoma. He invited his father out for a
visit, and took him on a tour of the property.

Driving along in the son's pickup truck, a jack rabbit hopped onto the road in front of them. The son stopped the truck to let the rabbit pass, and the father queried, "What in tarnation is that!?"

The son incredulously replied, "That's a jackrabbit, Dad, what did you think it was?" The father shrugged and said, "We grow 'em a lot bigger'n back home in Texas."

So they went on and a little farther on they came to a few buffalo roaming the range. The son stopped the truck and the father again said in a puzzled tone "What are those?"

The son hesitantly said, "Those are buffalo, Dad. You gotta be kiddin me. You really don't recognize them?" The father replied, "Well, I guess they're kinda familiar - it's just that we grow 'em so much bigger back in Texas."

The son, a bit disgruntled, drove on in silence. At length they approached a low part in the road with marshy wetlands on either side. A large snapping turtle lumbered onto the road. The father peered
intently at the creature and said "Now what on earth is that thing!?"

Without missing a beat, the son replied, "wood tick"...

I will be spending more time in OK now that my daughter is moving back there. I don't know much about the rest of Oklahoma, but we LOVE Tulsa!

ILG 09-08-2007 08:46 PM

I lived in OK for 14 years. Was UPC for all but a couple of months of it at the very beginning of it all.

I am so sorry for you. Next time you travel be sure and get out of the car or airplane!

I also have been to a majority of states (including Oklahoma) and quite a few countries in Europe.

I noticed that you said nothing feels lke home except Oklahoma and I guess that would be true if you are from there or have spent a lot of time there. However after reflection I realize that you don't really claim it is the best place to live. Very smart.

When I visited Oklahoma the citizens were warm and friendly but I ddi not leave thinking "I just have to live here, it is the best place on earth!!!".

However it is true that OK has the good fortune of at least being NEXT TO one of the best places on earth - Texas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:killinme

Well, you can always visit triumphant1's church that he pastors; that's a good place to start.

Then ORU is very impressive; that's where my daughter graduated. There is a pair of HUGE solid brass praying hands in the front of the campus that is worth seeing. The prayer tower is interesting, as it has the history of Oral Roberts' life and the school on video. ORU is at Lewis & 71st, I think.

There is a shopping plaza called Utica Square that has great shops.

Willie George's church/youth center is amazing to go visit.

Let's see....good restaurants would be Cheddars, Zio's (my fave), Charleston's, and a lot more by the mall that I can't think of right now. I think the mall is at 71st and Memorial, but I'm not positive.

Outside of the southern Tulsa area, I'm completely lost and have not been anywhere else.

Steve Epley 09-09-2007 07:58 PM

Ain't Oklahoma the name of a county in Texas??????????????????:driving

Who are your friends from Duncan? My dad pastored the UPC in Duncan from 1972 to 1979 and I graduated from Duncan Sr. High in 1976.

I might know them folks. Also, you might be surprised that IAM pastored an ALJC work in Duncan in the 80s or the 90s.

Fess Up and let me tell these Good folks HELLO with an OKIE twang!:killinme

I was raised in Lawton for the first 13 years of my life and then my dad took the church in Duncan and I lived there until I went to TBC. Never went back much once we moved to Louisiana... I will, however, be preaching a revival in Marlow OK beginning October 12, 2007.

the church in Marlow is pastored by two of the sweetest, most dedicated folks you will ever meet (been pastoring that church 52 years), my Uncle Alvin and Aunt Neice Turner!

The church in Duncan is also a good group of folks.

Amazing Grace, your friends can't lose by going to either one of these two churches. :) Family connections at both!
