I went to Walter Hawkins church Tonight!
They had a late night Concert honoring the Late Bishop E.E Cleveland who founded & pastored the Ephesians Institutional COGIC till his death at age 94 in Oakland. He was the founding pioneer in the Bay area. All of the Hawkin Clan came from his church. he had a huge church of many thousands.
anyhow, the place was standing Room only- hotter than H- - - , no air conditioning, people fanning themselves with fans, people standing outside and packed in the halls(overflow). since we first had to go to our church, we missed a lot of it, but what we heard was awesome of course. Bishop Blake of west angeles was there. I have a feeling most of the people here at AFF could not tolerate the environment LOL!:killinme It's VERY Urban, in a BAAAD Neighborhood, I mean BAD, SCARY ,and you see a little bit of EVERYTHING! lol Even in the church. you just take what you see and move on- A world of difference than traditional UPC. But i will say, the people are really friendly and kind and the crowd is full of energy, I mean charged! never a dull moment. well, that's it for the moment |
Depends what UPC church you mean.

Edwin & Walter traveled with my father for a season Edwin more than Walter. But I know them both. They seemed a little sweet to me not accusing them or anything.

LOL!!! I remember Edwin's big hairdo in the late 70's. Back in my JCM days Edwin and Wlater Hawkins along with Tramaine had some of the best gospel music in the world going on!!!! I didn't go myself but a bunch of JCMers got in trouble around 1978 or 1979 for going to a Hawkins concert. Sister Tramaine almost had a "wardrobe malfunction" when she was excitedly singing leaned too far over the stage down toward the audience. It was the talk of the JCM kids that had gone! LOL. |
THAD - I wish I would have been there with you! I love the Hawkins Family - my wife grew up with them!
I grew up in Memphis and would sneak down to Bishop J. O. Patterson's and LORD HELP that church was SO HOT on Sunday nights and they would dance till midnight! I got beat by my Dad so many times for going down there! When Gilbert Earl started Bountiful Blessings Temple of Deliverance - I joined the first Sunday and LOVED the Black Church and the COGIC. You are SO RIGHT! Ain't NO CHURCH like those Churches. LOL I know JUST what you are talking about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You know Church Alive is 70% black and we have just tapped into a group from Ghana and they LOVE IT. Had several Puerto Rican Families this week too! Thanks for the report! |

Steel Guitars
Quote:
There is a movement in South Florida called the House of God - Have you heard those black guys that go CRAZY on the STEEL GUITARS????? They are all from that Church! Here is a little bit about it. The House of God Church, a black Pentecostal movement founded in 1903 by evangelist M. L. Tate. Following Tate's death in 1930, a struggle among church leaders resulted in a court order that separated the church into three "dominions." Two of them, the Keith and the Jewel dominions, adopted the lap-steel guitar as the primary instrument of church music. |

i don't think I have ever heard of them ...UNLESS they are the same ones who believe in beating their children in front of the whole church to teach them a lesson?? I remember some big case about this in Atlanta. |
