Hidden Usernames- Are they slithering snakes to be avoided?

Some of the usernames in place are users who said they would leave, and did not. I am ok with someone posting with a nickname instead of a real name. This is not to reveal some usernames. I would hope no Admin Team member would ever do this.

So can I come back on here as "Liberal" and blast away?

Can I come on here as "TeleEvangelist" and belittle and ridicule?

If I were to use an alter ego, how long until you would find me out from my posting and language use?

:coffee2

What do you think?

I believe in the Trinity ....

ME ... MYSELF ... AND I ...

there are some who find it necessary to have multiple identities ... like Carrie ...

I'm just Dan.

Scott Hutchinson 09-28-2007 04:30 PM

I wonder if I could post as a Church Of Christ preacher and debate Apostolics ?

BoredOutOfMyMind 09-28-2007 04:30 PM

I confess to an alterego to test the board.

When my wife became more active, it was not needed.

I grant you absolution, one ball cap for redemption .

Theophilus 09-28-2007 04:32 PM

We only need one Dan.

Alter egos are ok if they are not used maliciously. Just ban them on their own merit.

tbpew 09-28-2007 04:34 PM

IMO,
one username per IP address would be great but I guess it is not practical with family members and multiple access points.

Extra usernames should be $50/yr. If you think your alter-ego is so special I'm sure he's also worth it.

IMO, Alter-ego's (not just replacement ones) hurt a discussion board....but so does a lack of cash!

I have a bad habit of not deleting them and so would take too long to find your addy again.

I promise to get it in the mail by Monday!

:sorry

If someone like PP does not reveal his real name for purposes of expressing opinions, or like another poster who doesn't wish their views to reflect on family members, I say go for it.

If a poster wishes to post something under another name to make a point and not reflect on their known standing here, I am fine with that.

But to change a username for the sake of ridicule and because they think they can, I find it insulting and unfair.

Boom...these people who have alter egos...does the admin team know by the IP who they really are?

I think it's sort of dishonest...which ego is real?

Sheltiedad 09-28-2007 06:32 PM

I know I have nothing to worry about here... I wonder about some "ultracon" 's though. ;)

Strongminded 09-28-2007 06:32 PM

I have a few names on here...but have always been consistant with my posting. I dont feel one should become a jekyl and hyde just to ride both sides.

I don't THINK that I said I would leave. :D

I came to AFF by personal invitation and until that changes, I will just hang around.

I have only ONE user-name and am happy to post under that ONE name.

Many on AFF know me personally.

I guess I could post my real name, nothing to hide, but when I started posting Jim Yohe advised me to get a user-name, so I did and have kept it from FCF, nFCF, GNC to AFF.

I am amazed that folks want to argue BOTH sides of the argument and BLAST someone from where they THINK they are unknown.

Says something about the person with multiple user-names.

It is no secret that owners and admin team members have MANY different names.

Just my thoughts- I have seen a couple of posters that upon reflection were probably "alter-egos" of another. If I picked up on that, then I was certain others who aren't as generally clueless as I am would have seen it as obvious.

I'm comfortable with the way things are. Can the system be abused? Sure, for a short time. Then the admins have come in and sweep up the mess. The alternative would be something less fun for the general user. And remember, this is supposed to be fun. Let's not take ourselves too seriously.

On the other hand, it should also be spiritually supportive and educational in a meaningful way.

So, like boxers getting ready for the title fight, we throw ourselves against the ropes to get a feel for the boundaries of the ring before squaring off...

BobDylan 09-28-2007 07:45 PM

I am just completely thankful that I have been extremely respectful and intelligent with my alter ego... otherwise someone may have figured out who I really am.... ;)

aliai (plural of alias) should only be allowed if they are used to make an actually funny joke or to make a point, not to rip on people...

If they are used to rip on people or cause problems they should be banned...

BTW, if I signed up as "larry_boy_44" and got my real name back... would that be ok??

I miss my name... }=O( I feel like I'm in witness protection or something...

IF they looked, yes.

That was not the intent of this thread and ....

I almost used an alter ego to start it.

I posted in post 1 the revelation maliciously of a username would be wrong.

Anomyous nicks have always been a mainstay. They can be fun. ONE poster who has not been here in a long while is unmistakable with the dry wit and word choice used.

To come here and put someone down is simply wrong. :sshhh

Not this one.

And I was not meaing Old Paths having a nickname.

I am talking about an ugly spirit to tear someone down with an agenda that would not work with a well known username.

I better change one of the banned spammers to "Liberal" before someone gets me in trouble!

I agree. I have used alter-ego's in the past on all the other forums, but only to talk about a subject that under my current nick I was uncomfortable in doing.

I don't think someone should sign under another nick to ridicule others.

Scott Hutchinson 09-28-2007 08:47 PM

My real name is Patrick Scott Hutchinson, but my parents always called me Scott.

FRINGE_NUTTER 09-28-2007 10:10 PM

I misread this question. I thought it said, "Are alter egos" wrong? I didn't notice the "to put others down". Putting anyone down is wrong. My comments are not made to do that - just to reveal truth.

I don't have a problem with alter egos but MPD's are a different story! :killinme
