For those who want to know...RULES at my church!

This is not about bashing...please don't to go there...this is just what my church was like and my Pastor wanted it....we didn't think it was necessary so we left! I love them, and I hope nothing but the best for them, I just think fear rules them and to me that is soooooo sad!

Rules...
1. No talking on the phone for more than 10 minutes
2. No friends outside of church, not even family (it was discouraged strongly)
3. No more than three families at a time in your home and not too often, if you had a gathering you are suppose to ask everyone in the church so no one gets offended.
4. No home bible studies without the ministry being there
5. You must attend all fellowships
6. So lunch dates, or shopping with friends even the ones in church...
7. No important decisions made without consulting the pastor...like, buying a car(new, used, how much you can spend)...same with a home or property.
8. You were not allowed to move, unless you had his OK.

Being we are older we did not attend parenting classes or marriage classes so we missed out on a lot of the rules...but over time we learned. This is not everything, but for the moment its enough...I might add more as I think of them.....

So there ya go Thad....

1. Pretty much…if you were talking more than 10 minutes your just gossiping! Funny though I had several very long conversations with my Pastor!
2. I don’t know how you win the lost if you don’t fellowship with them, you need to make a friend before they will want to hear your testimony…
3. Yes it is…but thems the rules, and that is why the church does not grow. It has a revolving door too many rules
4. NO home bible studies….I wanted to start a ladies bible study group, was told NO because we need to be there e to be sure you don’t get off track!
5. You were talked to if you did not attend all fellowships…scolded!
6. No daytime activities with friends….idle time…fun time
7. Nothing more here
8. I agree brother that is why we left….it was oppressive….

That kind of stuff is just plain nuttier than squirrel poop.

Totally uncalled for. Not at all what a pastor or church is supposed to be about.

LaGirl 10-29-2007 12:22 PM

sounds to me like the pastor has WAY TOO MUCH time on his hands...making up all of those silly rules!!!!!!!

Well color me surprised, I didn't know that it was the first church I had ever gone too sense I was a kid! I went in gung ho and wanted to please God, but the Pastor came first....which I didn't realize until later!

I miss so much the good parts, but not enough to go back and endure the bad stuff...its not exclusive to my old church either...its a district problem!

I just don't understand it really. WHY would a pastor want to overload himself with monitoring all this?? isn't pastoring stressful enough?
what does he really care?? I mean, is he really THAT concerned for the peoples' souls ??

I recall now ...someone said you had to consult the pastor if you and your husband was going to have another child ????????

also, Did you let of ALL rules and standards? if so, was it a result of these silly rules ?

Ferd 10-29-2007 12:23 PM

when did you leave? how long did you stay there?

did this pastor start the church or was he someone who was elected to a church you already attended?

now I do not know how true this is but i was told that there was a church years ago that taught that WHITE was the color of purity. So, everything that had to do with a personal nature had to be WHITE.
white Panties, White socks, white tissue, white toilet paper, white bras and under garments.

When I hear of extreme cases like this it legitimately makes me wonder if there are or were, health problems of the brain kind with this pastor. Various tumors can cause this kind of extreme paranoia that this man was obviously dealing with.

Do I Know you Sis TS...did we usta go to the same church?

Everyone of these where I was at for twenty years. We escaped in 1991

I might add

1. No birthday parties for kids
2. No tuperware (or any other) kind of party
3. No church friends to your house (except relatives)
4. Rule 4 did'nt apply to many..in that envirement , soon everyone is related (look at where inbreeding has gotten us)
5. Permission to go on vacation and you could'nt miss 2 sunjdays if you were on a one week trip.
6. No fishin on Sundays if you were on a fishing vacation.
There's more..lots more

chseeads 10-29-2007 12:30 PM

Any church run under these kind of premises does not produce spiritually mature saints. It produces helpless, dependent cripples that can't stand on their own. Bible study should be encouraged, not banned. But that's a power play that places authority in what the pastor preaches and not what you study out for yourself. It becomes a church full of people that have no answers for their faith except "That's what pastor says..."

I don't understand either, except they were so afraid...and the bad thing is because of the fear the control they drive people away...the don't allow anyone to be human....its a very painful thing to go through....

We did our very best to be the best saints we could, we worked hard, very hard, and did as we were told no questions asked, then some things started to happen that really rocked the boat...so we got out before the ship sank....I prayed long and hard believe me....I went back to see if I was being over emotional....I wasn't....we were the 10 percent that works our tail off, and we loved it...but the rest was just not right...and we were spanked from the alter constantly ..... never felt that we had a chance of making it to heaven....it was just too hard!

tamor 10-29-2007 12:32 PM

It must be contagious then because his son is the same...and I am sure when the grandson takes over he will follow in grandpas footsteps...

No tuperware or any other kind like that unless it was the pastors wife...
Yes few and far inbetween friends over
Yes we had to have premission to be gone
We were not allowed to miss church unless we had two broken legs...said in jest, but meant all the same
Hummm fishing I don't know about...

You got it....during times of trouble I was told stay close to the pastor and everything will be OK....now I realize they should have been saying seek God in this and He will guide you....

My goodness, we did go to the same church!!

The pasotr's son in law could not believe when he went on the first family vacation that some of the stuff preached against was done by the pastors family.

The excuse was we are strong enought to do this but the saints aren't.

All I can tell you...is that the current pastor which is my first pastors son...his wife was a very happy fun loving girl, and is now a sour faced unhappy woman....I see NO joy in any of them

freeatlast 10-29-2007 12:44 PM

We even had our own church version of the afirmation statement.

Filled out papers that we studied and prayed three hours and studied three hours over our sunday school lessons if we were teachers.
