QUESTION: Son Gets Married Tomorrow Night
Hey folks... won't be around too terribly much over the next few days. My middle child - another son - is getting married tomorrow night. Folks coming in from everywhere... should be a sweet ceremony with a lot of friends!
QUESTION: I talked today to IAM and my 'take' on the whole marriage of your kids stuff is this... I have three children (two oldest are sons and the baby is a girl) and the two sons have gotten married. My question is this... does anybody else feel a little weird about your 'little girl' getting married compared to your 'little boy'? I'm generally just kind of proud of my sons having great ministries and great lives finding pretty, spiritually minded girls. (Kind of a "Yea... that's my boy!" type thing). On the other hand, I can almost get angry thinking about my baby girl ever getting married. To me it's just different with girls for some reason... :bubble I get a feeling somewhere between the Godfather and Jeffery Dahmer! I guess another good question would be... do Mothers feel that way about their sons? Or do they have issues with their little girls marrying too? |
To me, though my little ones are a ways from marriage, it should be of no relative difference.
The key is who they marry and whether or not God is central in the marriage, not if and/or when. I would be just as uneasy if my son married someone sub par as if my daughter did. I think that you'll be at ease if and when your daughter finds the right man, especially if you pray about it instead of going with carnal feelings. Encourage her to pray about it and be sure. My parents wanted me to marry some nice little UPCi girl after my fiancé and I broke up and I returned to the Lord. They thought my fiancé at the time was a worldly waste for good pentecostal stock such as myself and that she would drag me down and back into the world. Fear is a devastating thing...if you follow it. I prayed and fasted and I knew that the Lord was with me in my decision to pursue my former fiancé in a whole new light. You never can tell what the Lord will do with what seems to be a sub par situation. We've been married for five years now and a better wife, mother and Godly woman you'll be hard pressed to find. Her parents were just as uneasy for just the opposite reasons, yet now they are very pleased as our family's lifesong gives glory to God and a strong witness of what he can do with a situation that looked hopeless. Of all their sons and daughters, we are the least of their worries now and they'll be the first to tell you that. If I boast, it of Christ, we were just willing to allow Him to have His way. We could never have done this on our own. So, fret not and pray about it. God has no less of a plan for your daughter than for your sons. |
I dont even have a daughter, and the thought makes me crazy.
this much I do know. A Son in Law is the worst animal on the face of Gods green earth. I do my dead level best to fullfill that role. |
Steadfast
Like you I have two sons and a daughter. When my sons married I was sad for their leaving but glad for their going. [ mixed feelings ] But a daughter is different. You were the "man" in her life and now some "whippersnapper" [sorry D...] has come and taken her away! I had to fight some real "blues" for awhile after my daughter left. No, your feelings are entirely natural but I suspect, like us all, you will have to swallow the lump in your throat and carry on! Raven |

I don't have a daughter but I do have two boys...
My Boys are like tupperware... I treasure them...use them.. their tough and pliable...and can bounce back... if I had a daughter I would think her like fine China beautiful and tender... I would think it hard to give her up after all the love and time I spent protecting her... imo.. |
I had two daughters and a son that have all married.
I have two great son-in-laws, but it's my daughter-in-law that worries me a little. She's sweet, but she comes from a hippy family and is odd sometimes in how she approaches things! Anyways.........start saving up, Rev, because the daughter's wedding will get expensive!!!!!! (Brides parents pay for the wedding) You get by cheap with boys when it comes to weddings! :D |

I tried to treat my only daughter like "fine china," as you suggested that you would. Then one day she rose up and told me that things were to be otherwise. Now I just follow orders. |

I have two young daughters, and maybe one on the way. We are going to raise them to be nothing but ladies...but precious little indoor girl china dolls they are not. They play hard in the yard, work hard in the garden. They aren't afraid of getting their hands dirty, or bloody. They've yet to kill their own meat, but they don't blink or get weak in taking an animal apart through to setting it on the table in world class fashion and flavor. They are the prettiest girls ya ever saw, smart and educated at home beyond their institutionalized peers. We are going to raise them to be the rare jewels that possess experience a wide variety of skills and tasks that will help insure their and their own future family’s survival in a Godly fashion. We believe that if you raise them right in the fear of the Lord with a pretty little head on their pretty little shoulders then no punk chump will get the one over on them or us. They'll smell little boys wanting to be men from a mile away by the time they are of age. China is pretty...in a china cabinet. Both are too delicate to be functional, but we haven't much humor for what is generally of the chinese way anyhow. We are more akin to what can be made pretty out of American Iron....stainless steel for example..pretty, sharp, functional, durable, long-lasting...with hearts of pure gold. If I even tried to treat them like fine china, I'd get the same retort you got and then they'd laugh because they would know I'm being a joker. They are no nonsense girls already, yet they know how to have good clean fun. To God be the Glory. Is it then that the men that are afraid of letting their daughters go are afraid of their daughters falling for someone just like themselves? Or just the opposite? |
You need to hear the song "I loved her first"
Seriosly, every man needs to hear that, ESPECIALLY fathers of daughters. You owe it to yourself! |

Wherein does the father daughter relationship stop when she gets married? If the relationship is solid it will be there the next morning. Are you losing a daughter or gaining a son? |

Seriously, the sooner the better. That way it's not a blindside sideswipe down the road. The training starts now for fathers as well as for daughters. |
I pity the first knothead who comes along wanting to date my daughters.
If he still fills like going out on a date after he gets whats coming to him from me, I might think about letting him have an evening out...WITH a chaperone. (Poor girls, they'll probably never get married with an overprotective gorilla like me for a father.) |

Now, daughters? That's another story. If my sons can afford to pay their bills, I have no problem with having two more pretty women around--the ones I've got around (a wife and two daughters) make my world go around! |
China is deceptively strong and tough. We use a nice china everyday. It takes heat, goes into hot water, etc. China is much stronger than most people realize.
So are daughters. That said, my girls say that when they meet the man they want to marry, they are going to tell him to go away. Because they love him. And they don't want to put him through what he is getting ready to go through from our family. :hunter It's not because they aren't strong. They can shoot as well as any man - at a distance. Tried, tested and proven. They have a great humor. They are smart. They are sharp cookies. Not much gets by them. But, they are our daughters. So, we all pity the men who come calling. It's a family joke. With our boy, well, we want him to find a good wife. Next week would be good.:thumbsup |
