Leaving Today for Hong Kong!
I would love to be added to your prayer lists. We do three services today here in Jackson and Memphis and then we fly out tonight, headed to Hong Kong. We will finally (Lord willing) have our long-awaited meeting with our head pastor from the Philippines, since it never has worked out for us to get to his country. He is also bringing our missions director from L & T Philippines, so we are excited about spending some time with them, strategizing for the future and talking through lots of things.
We know nothing about HK, other than what I've heard people say on here, and what we've read in Frommer's, so just pray that we get there and back safely and that our time would be productive. Thanks! |
Have a great time.
|
Hope you guys have a great time. You will be in our prayers.
|
We'll be praying that your trip will be enjoyable, safe and, above all else, fruitful. Please convey to the believers there that they are in our prayers.

They don't have General Tso's chicken there, so don't bother looking... :) I just got back a few weeks ago. I found it pretty easy to get around and used their train system (never bothered with a taxi while I was there). I found it very crowded, but the people were friendly. There is a Hong Kong tourists guide that you can download to your PDA that has street level GPS maps, common phrases, etc.
http://www.discoverhongkong.com/eng/...da/index.jhtml When shopping, don't forget to look up... many stores are not on the ground floor and you would never know they are there if you don't look up. The airport train to Causeway bay costs 400 HK dollars (which is about 10 bucks I think) and then you change to another train and can get just about anywhere for 10 HK dollars. |

I'm sure you'll LOVE HK. It's one of the most if not the most fascinating, exciting cities in the world. Be sure and check out some of the street markets while you're there, go for dimsum in one of the local restaurants, & be sure and visit Victoria Peak at night .... go up on the Tram and back down on the bus! :thumbsup I'm looking forward to a return visit in June. |
Sherri,
I will be praying for you and Eddie and this trip. Have a great time! |
I haven't posted on here before - but I live in Hong Kong. I'm an Australian who moved here about a year ago - I'm here semi-permanently at the moment!! My husband was born here and we both have a strong desire to help out the Chinese church over here.
I totally love Hong Kong some of the things on my "must do" list are: the markets - like Ladies Market in Mongkok, Stanley market (my fav)... You MUST go to the waterfront promenade at Tsim Sha Tsui at 8pm one evening for the light show over Victoria harbour!! I love the Peak - the tram is great!! Causeway Bay is great for shopping and eating... you should try going to some of the really local places - the other day, I ate at the foodcourt in Wan Chai wet markets - it was a bit scary but the food was great and for US$2.50, you have a big bowl of soup, a "main course" and unlimited white rice!! So if you want any info, or addresses of the best restaurants - or if you want to even meet (although I know this is my first post here - some people know me from other forums though, if you want a "character reference" ;) ) - you can PM me on here, or email me through my profile!! I hope you have a great time in Hong Kong - how long are you here for?? |
Oh and I just wanted to add - this is the BEST time of year to visit Hong Kong. It's cool, but not cold. AND everything is decorated for Christmas!! Hong Kong has awesome Christmas lights!! And the decorations in the malls are great too!!
|
We'll keep you guys in prayer! I have been invited to minister in China this coming year. I may just take them up on it. I'll keep you posted as to the particulars when they happen.
Be blessed!!! :D |

Which church do you attend? |
Sherri,
I prayed for you yesterday. And now I'm adding you and Eddie to my list to pray for daily. Have a wonderful and productive time while you are in China. You have such a heart for people, I'm sure that God will use you no matter where you find yourself. |
Bro Ma's
My husband's mum came to the Lord under the Holt's ministry (UPC missionaries, now retired) - but they have been close to the Ma's since they moved to Australia and all... The Ma's church didn't exist when my husband's family first left Hong Kong though... |

But back on the topic of Hong Kong, one of my TOTAL favourite place is Cheung Chau - an outlying island. It's awesome!! I gotta run now but I'll come back and tell you more about it ;) |

We've been to Cheung Chau but we went more often to Lantau. We vacationed there a couple times with our children and had a great time. There's the most wonderful beach there and it goes forever. I love HK! |

How long were you guys in Hong Kong for? Did you learn Cantonese? Are you talking about Mui Wo/Silvermine beach? I've heard of it but never been. I want to though!! Actually, the Ma's live in Mui Wo. I really need to go there some time - I've heard it's beautiful!! But I love Cheung Chau so much so every time I have a chance to go to an outlying island, I always go to Cheung Chau!! About Cheung Chau, it's name in English means "Long Island" and it's a gorgeous island with gorgeous beaches, some hills for hiking, bikes for hire, great seafood and really good "local life"!! And there is this dessert that you can ONLY find there - in English it's called "mango dumpings" - and it's mango wrapped up in this sweet kinda sticky wrap - soooooo good!! (ok, I admit, that's one of the reasons why I love Cheung Chau so much!!) Here's a pic of the Cheung Chau coast: http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/f...g/P4010045.jpg |
Oh - also...
I was going to post some pictures but I don't know if I can on this forum (it said something about needing moderator approval)... so if you want to see some pics of Hong Kong (they were from my Brother's trip here in April), go to http://s243.photobucket.com/albums/f...a/Hong%20Kong/ There are 8 pages of them - but there are some GREAT pics there. My brother is quite the photographer!! |

Oh - and moderators, whoever you are, you can delete my post #25 - it's a repeat of the one with the picture in it... sorry about that!!

Thanks for all the info! We are staying at the Renaissance on the Kowloon side of the harbor. We did watch the light show tonight and also the Christmas lights are amazing!!! Our hotel is very nice, except the beds are VERY hard - like sleeping on a slab. But other than that, it's great! We met all day with our head pastor from the Philippines and with his missions director. They are such sweet people; very humble! But he is a real visionary and thinks a lot like Eddie, so they are getting along great. It's so good to finally meet him in person, after seven years of only writing back and forth. He has lots of ideas for expanding Love and Truth Ministries in his country and for reaching the lost. We feel that it's been very productive spending time with them. Our next big project is to fund a new church building and missions center for him. |

Sherri,
I missed Bible study last night - couldn't help it. I didn't miss just because you were gone though! Glad your trip is going good! |
Sherri - how long are you in Hong Kong for? What are your plans while you're here?
I just got home from mid-week "bible study" but tonight we just had worship. My husband led and I coordinated all the music - it was awesome!! But I'm so tired now... *yawn* I was admiring the lights on the way home on the bus!! I love Hong Kong!! |

We came here to meet our head pastor and missions director from our churches in the Philippines. Everytime we've tried to travel to the Philippines to meet them, the terrorists bombed something and we didn't get to make the trip. (Eddie's life insurance will not cover him in any country that the U.S. state dept. has a warning out against.) Anyway....we ended up flying those two pastors over here to meet with us in Hong Kong. Our head pastor had never flown before and had rarely ever stayed in a hotel, especially one like this. We have had a great time with them, and it's been very productive. |
Sherri we have been up in jungle land but someone called me to let me know about your trip and we have been praying for you folks and your Philippine outreach. We too are just now leaving our hotel to travel some more...love you folks...and may God's blessings be upon you all.

Well, I'm so glad that we decided to come to HK instead of Manila. We just sat here tonight watching live TV where the rebel soldiers took over the Peninsula Hotel in Manila and they had to bring in a thousand soldiers to blast it with tear gas! That hotel is only down the same road from where we were scheduled to stay (1 Km). I think Hong Kong was a wise choice!!
