Study Bibles....
 
From my introductory post, I'm sure you've seen that I was raised in a UPC church. So I'm most familiar with the KJV. My husband though was raised in an Agnostic home where there was no real exposure to the Word. As such, I expect the learning curve of the KJV to be great and frustrating for him. He is an intelligent man, but has no love of the Elizabethan English of the KJV. I've been trying to research a good study Bible in a high-quality modern English translation. I've looked at NKJV, NASB, ESV and NET translations. All of them have their weak spots, as does the KJV. (I am not a staunch KJV-only person.) Does anyone have a Bible they really like? Or some suggestions for a person completely new to reading and studying the Word?

What type of translation do you want? word for word, paraphrase, etc?

For a study Bible, it needs to be a literal translation. He already has a dynamic equivalent at work, which is what he reads during the slow times at work.

If you husband is computer savvy.....my husband has a bible program with ALL the translations. Very neat concordance abilities also....great for studying. I know it is not traditional bible..but it is great for studying because you can see all of the different translation together. Great tool!

I would recommend The Spirit Filled Life Bible.
It is NKJV so it is very much like KJV but without the archaic language.
The notes are from a Pentecostal/Charismatic viewpoint.
Jack Hayford is the chief editor.
There is now a New Spirit Filled Life Bible which is, I suppose, new and improved. I bought a copy to give to someone. It looks pretty much like the regular Spirit Filled Life Bible I have had for several years.

for reading stories like ester and such the message bible is a gooden i like it. i like the amplified as well for some study to enhance a scripture i may be haveing trouble with. but i will never leave my thompson chain kjv.

It has everything a teacher needs in one cover.

Bible Dictionary, commentary, maps, thematic studies, word studies and more.

I inherited mine from my dad, who inherited it from his father-in-law (my grandfather).

It was printed in 1973, and looks like it just came off the press.

It has a set of workbooks that came with it when my grandfather purchased it. The Bible sells for a minimum of $200 and the workbook set sells for another $200.

I have many, many Bibles. Actually I am embarrassed to even post how many I have. But the New Analytical has always been my favorite.

I have an Oxford calfskin, a Dakes, a Thompson Chain WAP edition, a Life Application - just to name a few, but none of them come close to the New Analytical.

There's one up for auction on ebay right now. The current bid is around $62.
