Historical References
Does anyone know of some good references that show people baptizing in Jesus name and/or receiving the Holy Ghost throughout Christian history?
PS -- I do realize that the Catholic church not only killed such groups, but also tried to destroy their records. Thus, the records are hard to find. |
Re: Historical References
I was sure that Prax or Sam would have something.

Re: Historical References
There are references off and on throughout church history of gifts of the Spirit (tongues, prophecy, healing, miracles) occurring. There are some references to groups who rejected infant baptism and insisted on believer's baptism. There are references to people who insisted on baptism by immersion. Other than that I don't know of anything like you are asking.

Re: Historical References
It's important to note that many such groups were not viewed as separate from the Catholic church. They were regarded as heretical Catholics in many instances. But beware, many groups that are believed to have baptized in Jesus name didn't experience all of Acts 2:38. Many were very liturgical without tongue talking. Some observed tongue talking, Jesus name baptism, but believed in the Trinity. It's an odd mix.
