Question About Strongs Concordance

Normally in Strongs whatever word we are wanting to look up has the English word then across from it will be the Strongs number to reference it to the Greek meaning.

What does it mean when there is an English word listed but there is no number across from it?

Hmmm thats what I thought. But the word I was looking up was not in italics in my Bible which indicates the word being inserted. Thats interesting.

Thanks DM and Scott.

What specifically is the verse in question?
Some times a translation cannot be made strictly word for word.

Luke 1:35

35: And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

I was researching the word "thing".

"That holy thing" is all translated from G40.

Probably means the actual word was added by the translators (KJV). If you are referring to the hard copy, it shows everywhere in the bible where that word occurs in the english in the KJV. Go to that verse in the KJV and see if the word is in italics.

BTW Strongs is about the worst dictionary/concordance you can use. It's great for a KJV concordance, but when it comes to the greek/hebrew words definitions and useages it's much better to get an extensive lexicon/dictionary. STrongs is old and outdated and strongs lumps several genders or tenses of a word all under one heading.

For example One in greek. It says "Heis"....but that is the masculine form. Strongs lumped the masculine, neuter and feminine all under that and the gender can sometimes determine HOW the word is to be used.

Neuter often has the use of a unity more often than numeric and masculine often has the use of numerical Oneness more often than a unity

ESV
Luk 1:35 And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy--the Son of God.

NET
Luk 1:35 The angel replied, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called the Son of God.

The KJV translated the greek word for Holy into "Holy Thing"

hag'-ee-os
From ἅγος hagos (an awful thing) compare G53, [H2282]; sacred (physically pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially consecrated): - (most) holy (one, thing), saint.

It could just as well be Holy One.

Luk 1:35 And the angel answered and said to her, The Holy Spirit shall come on you, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow you. Therefore also that Holy One which will be born of you shall be called Son of God.

Luk 4:34 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.
