I Once Was on The Rush Limbaugh Show
 

This is a thread to share little unknown information about yourself or interesting stories about your life: a brush with fame, a crazy college stunt, a crime you committed, a famous relative, an unusual talent, an interesting incident traveling, a funny anecdote about anything, a once in a lifetime experience or an intriguing story.

I'll begin.

It was 1996 and I had just watched the opening ceremonies of the Atlanta Olympics. If you saw that ceremony you will recall the surprise athlete who emerged to light the torch: Muhammed Ali. It was a touching moment seeing the once great Olympic gold medalist and three-time heavyweight champion of the world standing there, holding the torch, trembling from the effects of his Parkinson's disease. Bill and Hillary Clinton were there in a presidential box witnessing the event.

The next day, Bob Costas, the NBC host of the Olympics, had the Clintons in the studio for a short interview. He mentioned the powerful imagery of Ali lighting the torch. BC said, "Yes, I was touched by the moment. Later at a private party I asked for someone to bring MA to me so I could talk with him. When they brought nhim to me I said 'Muhammed, tonight the world witnessed the reconciliation of Muhammed Ali with America.'"

When I heard it I was incredulous. Immediately I saw through the pretense of the president and understood that the statement had more to do with himself than Ali. He was essentially saying, "Hey, Muhammed, we both dodged the draft during the Vietnam War and America forgave me and elected me president. I know how it feels to be perceived as a hero in spite of dodging the draft. America has now forgiven you. Now we're a part of the same club."

I had worked the next day at the church where I youth pastored and had called my wife to come and pick me up so I could go home (we were down to one vehicle). While I was waiting on her to pick me up I was listening to Rush Limbaugh. I had decided to try to call and share these observations about the Clinton interview. I had tried to call in before but never got through, always getting a busy signal. I called the toll free number and kept hitting redial as over and over I kept getting a busy signal.

All of the sudden instead of the busy signal, I got through! A few ring tones and then the voice of Bo Snerdly answers "The Rush Limbaugh Show. What do you want to talk about?" I told him. He started laughing and said, "You've got to be kidding! Okay, hold on a few minutes."

I waited while I listened to Rush pontificate and talk to other callers and go to commercial breaks. I had plenty of time to think of how I would greet Rush with a "ditto". Finally after about 15 minutes, Rush said, "Back to our callers, ______________ from _______________, go ahead." I came in with "Mega One God, Acts 2:38 dittos, Rush!" He said, "Whatever that means!"

I proceeded to tell him my observations about the opening ceremonies and Clinton's interview the next day. He had not seen them. I said, "Without President Clinton saying so, he was essentially saying that America had forgiven him for dodging the draft by electing him president." Rush responded, "He didn't have to! That's what makes him so slick!" Then he went on a diatribe about how self-serving and narcissistic Clinton was, how that Ali had been forgiven by America long before for his dodging of the draft, how pathetic it was for Clinton to take advantage of a crippled, ailing and aging athlete to prmote himself.

I had one other observation I wanted to share but while Rush went on, I was disconnected. I couldn't believe I had been on live radio with Rush Limbaugh.

The funny thing was I got a phone call later from some preachers that were out at the District campground working in preparation for a Minister's and Wives Retreat and listening to the show wanting to know if it was me. Some time later my presbyter told me he was listening that day and wondered if it was me. Another time my District superintendent also said he was listening that day and heard me on the show. (Which prompted me to inform him and my presbyter respectively that I had watched the Olympics from my aunt's house not my house in case they were concerned whether I had a tv or not---LOL!)

I know a guy who always greats me at conferences and meetings if we run into each other, "The only man I know who has ever been on the Rush Limbaugh Show!"

As a loyal Rush listener, since 1992, I appreciate this. I have tried but never go through. I have called a local show here and got through, The Tom Sullivan Show, who now has gone national on Fox Radio and Fox Business TV. But getting on the Rush Show is the Mt. Everest of calling in to a talk show.

I got through another time a few years ago driving down the highway but Bo didn't like what I wanted to talk about. He disconnected me. it was on "Open Line Friday". I can't remember what I wanted to say.

I have been on two talk shows before, but can't remember either as to the content.


I did have an unusual event happen, actually I have had several, but I will share this one.

I was working at a bank in a southern state on a Saturday. About 15 minutes before closing a tall lanky fairly young man came struting into the bank and said "Don't anybody move this is a stick up".

Well back in the day many customers thought it was cute to say that and you sorta learn to ignore them. So I kept on counting my money so I could get out of there and go home!

Then I heard him say "hurry up you have x seconds left". That's when I looked up and saw he had a gun and we were sure enough being robbed. My heart nearly stopped! I started gathering my money up and putting it on the counter, but fortunately he started at the other end and left before he got to me. I had the most money as I was the head teller that day. This was not the branch I normally worked at, but it was the closest to where I lived. He then said don't look at me and turned to leave. Being really short I saw him as he left and marked in my mind where he came to on the french doors and the direction he left in.

Well thanks to him we couldn't leave for another hour. All the employees had to be finger printed by the FBI and write up their account of what happened.

The FBI kept coming back and asking me questions about him, as I seemed to have noticed several things that others had not.

Well about two weeks later my husband and I had gone out to eat at Red Lobster and we were nearly finished eating when I noticed a guy that looked just like the robber! I nearly freaked out. I told my husband get the ticket and lets go before he recognizes me.

I was really young, and if I had to do it over, I would have asked someone to call the police because even if he was not the one he looked enough like him they could use him to draw a likeness.

I remember hearing a "One God acts 2:38 ditto's Rush" several years back!

I thought it was about the coolest thing since sliced bread!

I even recal his response, and thinking, "somebody needs to tell him about the Holy Ghost!"

I have had quite a few weird/unusual incidents over the course of my life but the most recent was this summer.

I went down to So. Cal. with my parents and my daughter to the Huntington Library. We were going in order to get out of the central CA. heat, it generally is 10 to 20 degrees cooler in southern CA during the summer. We had high tea, and looked at the exhibits and then went to look at the gardens.

This day was the exception, it was VERY warm in Pasadena, and we were uncomfortable as we walked through the gardens. My dad HATES to be hot, so he wasn't necessarily having a lot of fun.

We were going down a path and all of the sudden the path just ended, and it was a considerable distance back to the main walkway. At the end of the path was a middle aged women pushing an elderly woman in a wheelchair. She was trying to push the woman up a slight hill, in the dirt, in the hopes that it would be a shortcut.

We of course immediately offered to help, my dad took the wheelchair and went on ahead to find the closest path. The nurse (which is what she turned out to be) and I took the old woman under the arms and basically carried her up the hill. Did I mention it was hot? (It also became apparent that the woman was not in full control of her mental faculties, she was talking crazy talk) Approx. 10 minutes later, we finally all made it to the main path, gasping and sweating profusely.

The woman thanked us for our help and asked for us to pose for a picture with the woman. (which must have been lovely, considering the shape we were in). As we started to walk away she said "by the way, this woman is the Nancy O'Connor, the widow of Carroll O'Connor". (of All in the Family and Heat of the Night fame) It was kind of a weird moment... What do you say? Oh? Wow? OK? It was awkward! LOL! We kind just mumbled "Oh cool", and said goodbye. :jolly

I was on Rush once myself. You would not believe the phone calls i got from people who heard me.

I have also been on the Joe Scarborough show a number of times. In fact, I was able to debate an executive director of the ACLU on his show.
