Historical Pictures

These are some historical Pentecostal photos.

Top left is the stable at 312 Azusa Street in Los Angeles. During the period of 1906 to 1913 this was sort of the "headquarters" of the world wide Pentecostal movement.

The bottom picture is listed as the first Jesus' name baptism east of the Mississippi river and is dated 1915. There are some differences of opinion on when people started baptizing in Jesus' name. Andrew Urshan (1884-1967) was baptizing in Jesus' name in Chicago in 1910 but he himself did not get baptized in Jesus' name until a few years later. Charles Parham (1873-1929) is said to have baptized folks in Jesus' name in the early 1900's and L.R. Ooton may have been baptizing people in Jesus' name in Indiana back in 1913.

The others are some pictures of some of the "old timers."

You mean the picture of the man and woman in the center of the collage?
No, she does not.

This is a larger version of the picture in the center of the collage.
The woman does not have on earrings.
She is eighteen years old.
The picture was taken in Indianapolis, IN in the late summer/early fall of 1959
at a church called The Church of Jesus Christ.
Bishop G. Brock, Presiding Bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ Pentecostal Faith, was the pastor.

I'm not sure if women in the other pictures have on earrings or not.

Thanks for sharing these. I love old photos of the Pentecostal heritage. I should
learn how to do the posting. I have several old photos that my mom and dad had of church gatherings from the 40's.

A mighty sweet couple standing behind the pulpit.

btw, I see that you have a picture of John Lake in there too. He was at Azusa street. I have an old picture of him with some of the workers and Wm Seymour.

She was 18 and I was 21 and our first child was born in November of that year. We did not have a car but had a ride to Indianapolis from someone else (a preacher in that organization) who was going up there. We were there for a Saturday night service, then the other preacher left. We spent the night with the pastor and his wife. They lived in a garage that was on the property of one of the church members. It was one room but they had some curtains around the part where their bed was. My wife and I slept on a lumpy couch. Next day after Sunday morning service we rode a bus the 100 miles back to Cincinnati. I was not affiliated with that organization at the time but had recently been licensed by The Church of Jesus Christ (Bishop Mark Lawson was Presiding Bishop). The church we visited in Indianapolis was called The Church of Jesus Christ and was pastored by Bishop G.R. Brock who was Presiding Bishop of an organization named The Church of Jesus Christ Pentecostal Faith.

Bishop Mark Lawson chartered The Church of Jesus Christ back in 1927. Since then it has split and fragmented several times. Many of the split groups use the term "Church of Jesus Christ" in their name. Bishop Boyd Lawson (son of the late Bishop Mark Lawson) is Presiding Bishop of The Churches of Jesus Christ International in Cleveland, TN. Their web site (for those who may not know it) is:
http://www.angelfire.com/tn3/cojci/
And even though they have modified the name of the organization somewhat and do not use "The Banner of Love" for their official publication, they still reference the 1927 charter date and their license/credential uses the name "The Church of Jesus Christ."
