"Fright Night"

I have a story, not a Halloween story, but something real that happened to me years ago. I will share it since I believe many others here can probably relate.

It happened years ago when I still lived at home with my parents. My father and I would often alternate taking my mother to church, since she didn't drive. One night after service, I told her that I'd be going out with some friends, so she implied that dad would pick her up after the service. After arriving home, I silently tiptoed down the hall to my room, and noticed mom wasn't lying beside my dad in the bed. I checked my suspicions, figuring she'd be following right behind me at any moment.

Later on, I woke up at about 3am, confused, and a little worried. I slipped down the hall and peeked in the room. No mom. I quickly woke up my dad. "No, I never brought her home," he said. In moments, he was on the front porch calling out her name. I went back to my room and began to grow numb. Questions filled my mind. Oh God, the rapture happened! Why didn't I make it! My breaths grew rapid and my pulse quickened. I ran to the porch where dad had lit up a cigarette and was standing in his briefs. "Call so and so and see if she went there." I called her friend. The worst moment was when her "unsaved" husband answered. Oh God, not you, I thought. "Is your wife home?" I had faith in that woman's salvation, and when she came to the phone in a small, tired voice, I knew it would be alright. We later found out that mom had reluctantly went out with another friend, for coffee, and was unable to call at the time.

My mom found it to be humorous, but that was probably the scariest moment of my life. It occurred during a time when my view of God was skewed by insecurity and fear. Over the years, I have grown to trust him as a loving father.

O.k., I know I'm not alone, anybody else want to confess, or tell your scariest moment?

Ah yes I had one of those moments.

We had been watching the Left Behind movies at church. I had horrible nightmares of demons and being left for quite some time I would wake up screaming. One night this happened and I ran to my parents room to crawl in their bed. Only no one was there. I ran through the house looking for them. Finally sometime later they came in the house, they had went out for a swim in our pool after putting us to bed.

I hated those movies.
