Hey Jules. Real Music.

I realize that for some, Paul McCartney is just as evil as anything that was on the AMA awards Sunday night. But last night (Thanksgiving) there was a special of Paul performing in the new ball park that replaced Shea Stadium. As I was watching it, and as some of it brought tears to my eyes, I could only think, "Now where was this stuff Sunday night?"

For example....he ended the show with "Hey Jude". Quick story:

In 1968, when the marriage of John & Cynthia Lennon was ending, their son, Julilan who was 5 at the time, was struggling greatly with the separation of his parents. Paul took a day to drive out into the country to see Julian (nickname Jules) and try to help him. He wanted to say something to encourage him and on the way, put together some words that became a song by the time he arrived at the Lennon ranch: "Hey Jules, don't make it bad, take a sad song and make it better."

He was telling Julian to take a bad situation of his life and turn it into something good. Eventually, so that John and Julian wouldn't be focused on, the song became, "Hey Jude".

I just wonder how many songs at the AMA awards had that kind of content behind them. I hate to sound my age, but wow, but what Paul McCartney did? Now THAT was music.

I know why, what?

That story has been around for 40 years, don't know why it wouldn't be true. There are actually a lot of amazing stories behind a lot of his songs. "Let it be", for instance. A lot of people think "Mother Mary" is a catholic reference to the "Virgin Mary." But Paul McCartney's mother's name was "Mary" and she died of cancer when he was 14.

Nearing the end of the Beatles' existence, there was a lot of infighting in the band. Paul had a dream one night and his mother was in the dream. Throughout the dream, she kept saying, "Paul, just let it be, let it be." It was something that she had told him as a child.

So hence the song "Let It Be" and the words, "When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be."

I heard Paul tell this story in an interview...

I just think it's interesting that many songs that are "inspired" end up being classics, whereas the songs that are written just for the sake of writing a song that day, end up being space fillers on an album.

You must've gone to one of those back-masking seminars in the 80's. "Turn me on, dead man." That was in a Beatles song somewhere. Those were the days when people were seeing the devil behind every telephone pole.

And the line "You can check out any time you like but you can never leave" in "Hotel California" really freaked everybody out.

When you play a country song backward:

Your wife comes back

Mama returns from Heaven

The bank returns your truck

Your girlfriend leaves

Your dog gets well

The juke box breaks down

Your guitar goes out of tune

You get out of jail

The trains stop running at night

etc
