Italian TV suspends cat stew lover
February 17th, 2010 @ 10:50am

ROME (AP) - Italian state TV has suspended a cooking show host who shocked the nation by saying cat stew is a Tuscan delicacy he has enjoyed many times.

RAI TV confirmed on Wednesday that it had suspended Beppe Bigazzi, the 77-year-old host of a popular morning program that offers food tips and recipes in a country renowned for its cuisine.

When a young woman on the show was startled by Bigazzi saying he has eaten cat stew many times, the host defended his culinary tastes, noting Italians eat rabbit, chicken and pigeons. Horse meat also is sold in Italian shops.

His critics included Health Ministry Undersecretary Francesca Martini. She says Italian law protects pets from mistreatment and that Bignazzi's comments contradict growing public sensibility toward animals.

Re: I love cats......

We have two cats.

One is about 14 years old. We inherited her when my daughter moved out of state 10 years ago. She is my wife's cat and does not have much to do with me.

The other cat kept hanging around our patio doors when it was cold and snowy. We put out food because we wondered if it had anything to eat. When we were able to get it into the house we took it to a vet and had her checked out. She was about a year old and in pretty good health so we left her there to be neutered and have her front claws removed. We brought her home and kept her in a back bedroom for a week to recover. Now for the past two weeks she has the run of the house. The older cat has not accepted her yet and some times there is hissing and growling.

The new cat runs from me but a few times she has sat near me on the couch or at the foot of my chair and let me pet her.

What qualifies as a pet? If someone owned a cow is that a pet? Some people have pet cows. If a cat is wild, can it be eaten?

I would never eat a cat, but I think this is silly to react this way.

Hey, what do you call an Italian with 2 cats in the Tuscany region? Ranchers :ursofunny
