was adam immortal

Was Adam immortal before the fall? What would be the purpose of God putting the tree of life in Eden if Adam was already immortal?

Yes, I do believe Adam was immortal. Having access to the "tree of life" is what made him immortal in the first place. I believe that the "tree of life" is a metaphor for God's Holy Spirit which resided in Adam before the fall, and now resides in man again because of the cross.

We know from Genesis that Adam had access to the "tree of life" because he was told he could "eat" from every tree in the garden except for the "Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil".

So why was God "afraid" that Adam would get His Spirit back, how could he?

Genesis 3
22 And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." 23 So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. 24 After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side [e] of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

Our physical bodies need a constant supply of food or we die. Just like the physical, our spiritual person needs "food" also to survive. This spiritual "food" that we need comes directly from God and only he can give it.

When the Holy Spirit comes into a person's life it resurrects that person's Spirit from the dead. However, without a constant supply of this "food", it will not survive. You get this spiritual food from God's Word and the Holy Spirit.

When Adam was first created his spirit was alive. His spirit ate from the tree of life freely. When Adam sinned his spiritual person died and God took away the spiritual food that would sustain him. That is what I believe the Tree of Life really is.

I contend Adam was NOT immortal..It is very clear where HE was created and WHAT was He created FROM..

HE was created OUTSIDE the Garden..and had to be placed IN the Garden to have access to the Tree of Life...

God told Adam that the day He ate of the forbidden fruit,He would surely die.I do not think it took 900 yrs for Him to die..God said IN THE DAY you eat you WILL die..

Once Adam sinned..God did not say the reason He will return to the dust was becaused He sinned..but.........from dust thou was taken and to dust you will return..

Adam was made from dust..dust is not immortal..
Adam was from God and had perfect blood
Adam chose to disobey

Jesus was made from a woman and the Spirit of God...He is from God
Jesus had perfect blood
Jesus was tempted [and could have sinned} yet He did not

Jesus was the Second Adam..HE came to restore what Adam lost..Adam did not loose physical death..HE lost spiritual death,Abel was the first man to physically die,not Adam.Jesus did not come to redeem the death of Abel..
