Turkey. Cranberry sauce. Pumpkin Pie. Taters. Stuffing. EGG NOG (yum).

Hey all, we Canadians eat much the same as Americans, turkey and stuffing, ham, vegetables, lots of gravy. There are some differences from place to place though. Here in Newfoundland we use savoury as the herb and chopped onions in the bread dressing. We also usually boil our vegetables with salt meat, and use the liquid for making the gravy with the turkey drippings. Peas pudding is also a favourite, and for veges, we use potatoes, carrotts, cauliflour and broccoli, corn, and other root crops. We also use mustard pickles, pickled beets, and cranberry jelly. We drink a local syrup made at Purity bakery, a local company. Most of the veges are local produce, our growing season here is short, that's why our Thanksgiving is a month ahead of the American Thanksgiving. We do not exchange gifts, it's not a big shopping day here, it's a time for families to eat together and give thanks for the gifts that God has given us. P.S. Pumpkin Pie isn't a favourite here in Newfoundland for dessert, it never quite caught on, although I like it.

I had a Canadian coworker that always took vacation days for this weekend due to the family Thanksgiving celebration.

Sooo... are Christopher Columbus, the Pilgrims/Indians, mayflower stories big there?

Those stories are not big here, Canada was founded differently, although they are taught in schools as part of history. When the Mayflower came over Newfoundland was long settled. St. John's, Newfoundland is the oldest settlement in North America, Cupids, Newfoundland was established in 1610. Canada's Thanksgiving isn't as old as your though, and is more of a Thanksgiving for the blessings we have been given, the things we have, for families and friends and for the harvest.
