Gifts Of The Spirit

Let's talk Gifts. :)

The word says this...

1 Corinthians 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.
1 Corinthians 12:5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
1 Corinthians 12:6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
1 Corinthians 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
1 Corinthians 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
1 Corinthians 12:9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
1 Corinthians 12:10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another [divers] kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

So the list turns out to be...
Word of Wisdom
Word of Knowledge
Faith
Healing
Working of Miracles
Prophecy
Discerning of Spirits
Divers Tongues
Interpretation of Tongues

I would like to hear any thoughts on how some of these gifts operate.

For instance... what is a Word of Wisdom? How does it differ from a Word of Knowledge?

How is the gift of Faith different from the amount of faith we are all given?
What are your thoughts on Discerning of Spirits?

etc.

I am teaching on the gifts Sunday in my Sunday School class and we are going to pray that ALL the gifts work in our local assembly. But I need to have an understanding of some of these gifts.

Your input will be appreciated.

Re: Gifts Of The Spirit

These are some notes I've used when teaching on this subject:

Spiritual Gifts or Gifts of the Spirit

1. Present in the Early Church
Mark 16:14-20, Hebrews 2:1-4;
Acts 2:43; 3:1-10; 4:30; 5:12-16; 8:4-8; 39; 9:32-35, 36-42; 14:3; 19:11-12

2. Power Behind the Gifts
1 Cor 12:1-11, Romans 12:1-21, Ephesians 4:8; Acts 10:38
God does not just call us to work for Him but to work with Him (Mark 16:20)
God empowers through the gifts

3. Placement of the Gifts
1 Cor 12:7-11, 18, 28
God works through people but by His own will
gifts not rewards, tools not trophies or toys

4. Gifts Pictured (described, listed)
1 Corinthians chapters 12 13, 14; Romans 12:1-21; Ephesians 4:1-8; 1 Peter 4:8
see table on page 2

5. Perspective of the Gifts
1 Corinthians chapter 13 between chapters 12 and 14
The assembly at Corinth was planted by Paul, Silas, and Timothy between Sept. AD 51 and February AD 53 (2 Cor 1:19; 11:9)
In autumn of AD 55 Paul wrote to them from Ephesus (Acts 19:22; 1 Cor 16:8-10)

6. Purpose of the Gifts
1 Cor 12:7 to help the body grow/develop, for the good of all
1 Cor 14:3, edify (build up), exhort (stir up), comfort (lift up, cheer up)

7. Permanence of the Gifts
1 Cor 13:8-13; Ephesians 4:11-16
“There are those who believe that spiritual gifts ended with the Apostles. That whole argument, in my opinion, is based entirely on one single poor interpretation of one single verse in the New Testament.” Dave Workman 5/30/98
The gifts are for an imperfect church and will no longer be needed when the church is raptured or perfected.

8. Protocol or Propriety of the Gifts
Protocol “the forms of ceremony and etiquette observed by diplomats and heads of state” or chain of command 1 Cor 14:26-33, 40; Hebrews 13:17

9. Our Personal Attitude toward the Gifts
1 Cor 14:1, 39 earnestly desire, covet
1 Thess. 5:20-21; Isaiah 8:20; Jer. 5:13
Former Assembly of God general supt. Thomas Zimmerman once compared the Holy Spirit to a mighty river, and the scriptures to the banks of that river. He said great harm occurs when the river over runs the banks, but the river can do great good when it stays within the banks.

Re: Gifts Of The Spirit

For the most part I think LS got the gifts right in his book.

This is a funny area because the bible does not give a lot of details and really some of this is pure experience.

Perhaps a word of knowledge is to know certain facts about someone or a situation and word of wisdom is what to do.

I've had experiences where I was praying about someone's situation and it came to me what they needed to do. One time I was praying and after that, I wondered if this was really God and the thought came to me, when I came home that person would be on the telephone.

When I came home that person WAS on the telephone with my roomie. He hadn't called or anything in a month or so. After I told him what came to me while praying he said that he had been thinking that he needed to do that very thing.
