Shaw: ???'s to Help Christians Make Ent. Choices
Rodney Shaw's latest blog lists the following checklist for those making "entertainment choices" ... Your thoughts ... any questions stand out?

Some of those are really good. Others are.... meh....
I don't think that every activity I engage in necessarily has to improve my spiritual life. I do think I need to not engage things that will hinder my spiritual life. |

Which one's are "meh" .. The question about what would your spiritual mentor say or do stands out .... What if your spiritual mentor is Steve Epley or Steve Hoover? |
Re: Shaw: ???'s to Help Christians Make Ent. Choic
These are the ones I think are 'meh'.... for the reason I stated above:
Does this activity promote godly attitudes and behaviors? I don't think everything has to promote godly behavior. Just shouldn't really promote ungodly behavior. There is a difference. Do I leave this activity more or less equipped for the spiritual life? For reason stated above. Everything done doesn't have to be super-spiritual. This one: Does this activity appeal to my carnal nature, i.e., the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, or the pride of life? Some things in life do appeal simply to our carnal nature. Buying a pretty new car, or eating a slice of chocolate cake. I think these things have to be done in balance. Following our carnal natures shouldn't be the lone goal of our lives (and it is for some people), but it doesn't mean that every single thing we do has to have some deep spiritual significance. |

Questions to Help Christians Make Entertainment Choices
Can I maintain my Christian witness and engage in this activity? This one is ok Can I glorify God in this activity? Ok Can I invoke the blessings of God, praying in the name of Jesus, for my involvement in this activity? this one is a little awkward. Does this activity leave me feeling as if I have compromised my values? ok Would I be comfortable inviting my spiritual mentor to engage in this activity with me? ok (Im translating this to mean pastor since I don't personally have a spiritual mentor) Does this activity promote godly attitudes and behaviors? uumm, if this can be translated to say; "Can I promote ....... " then ok Do I leave this activity more or less equipped for the spiritual life? Not applicable. Does this activity appeal to my carnal nature, i.e., the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, or the pride of life? Well, guess this does away with church potlucks. Does this activity portray, promote or condone behaviors, attitudes or philosophies which are condemned in the Bible? ok Do I feel guilty, like I am violating my conscience, or the need to repent after I have engaged in this activity? ok Am I committed to ceasing my involvement in any activity which turns out to be in violation of biblical principles, including but not limited to turning off a device or walking out of a venue? ok How does my commitment of time and resources to this activity compare to my commitment to spiritual disciplines and participation in the life of the church? ok |
Re: Shaw: ???'s to Help Christians Make Ent. Choic
My favorite show comes on. I pull out Shaw's list and start answering the questions. I'm almost finished... oops, show's over. :heeheehee
I could narrow it down a bunch: Is this benefiting me and/or others? Would I be embarrassed to do this if Jesus was standing beside me? Is this wasting my time or consuming too much of it? |
Re: Shaw: ???'s to Help Christians Make Ent. Choic
Mine is pretty simple - 'Does this make me feel ick?'
