Scientiest May Clone Mammoth

Very very interesting, and have been waiting for this for years!

YAKUTSK, Russia – Japanese and Russian scientists might be able to clone a mammoth after confirming the presence of well-preserved bone marrow in a mammoth thighbone found in Siberian permafrost, Kyodo News reported.

The scientists from the Sakha Republic's mammoth museum and Kinki University's graduate school will begin research next year to regenerate the huge mammal, which became extinct about 10,000 years ago.

I am looking forward to this! 10 thousand years is a blink of an eye to our Earths history and the concept of viable Mammoth DNA is very likely.

Re: Scientiest May Clone Mammoth

would they have to clone a male and a female in order to reproduce?

We have no cloning tanks like Star Wars, it requires an actual womb to carry the embryo. Where are they going to be able to find one to hold the little one?

An elephant cow will give birth. The newborn will be exactly one half mammoth and one half African elephant. Subsequently the newborn will sire the new offspring which will be will 3/4 mammoth and 1/4 elephant.

I will have to refrain from dying of laughter if it turns out that the mammoth/elephant hybrid is sterile.

Couldn't they continue to use the cloning method to combine the developing species if the hybrid was sterile?

That might be best too... if they could ever get a 97% mammoth it would interesting to see but when you interject a new species into an environment with the ability to procreate you can cause a whole new set of problems.

That is exactly what they would do.

I am sure there are ways of predicting if the initial offspring will be sterile or not, but it would be hilarious if they were since it would throw just one more wrench into the Answers in Genesis crowd when talking about Noah's Ark and how there were FAR FEWER species back then.

Why can't they make an egg that's 100% mammoth? Would it be fatal for the surrogate mother? Maybe after a couple of generations, would a 100% mammoth be feasible?
