How would you handle it- disrespectful loggers.

We are having 25 acres logged. I understand that these guys usually work out in the woods without people around... but I made it clear from the beginning that this is a farm... we have livestock... we have fences and gates that are there to keep said livestock in...

Yet day after day I find gates left open... today they let 15 head of momma cows and calves out and they traveled 1/2 a mile before I found they were gone... Getting them home through the woods was hot sweaty work...and it's not like any of them climbed down off a piece of equipment to help.

My Dear Husband says they will only be here a short time more and if we offend them they may leave a bigger mess (impossible, they've even dropped trees on my brand new field fence) or not pay us fairly (quite possible since the 'every Friday' pay got skipped last week because the owner needed the money)... Personally I'm ready to let the chips fall where they may and roll some heads...

I hate to be a meany but I don't want to wait until something dies to address the problems.

i would get the law envolved, what they are doing is destruction of private property.

also if any cattle is lost do to their negligence and can be proven they are liable for conpensating

Are they licensed and bonded? If they are, I would be letting them know that any damage that incurs because they refused to take any precautions will be billed to them. Then proceed to let them know that you will be billing them for those damages. I would run out there and take some pictures.

They are doing this to you and your husband because they perceive you will not hold them accountable for their actions. I would also demand skip payments or stop the logging process.

What a nightmare! I think AYR gave great advice. Maybe you could call the Better Business bureau. It may be that these people have done others this way.

Have you communicate your concerns to the owner of the logging company? Or is he actually there onsite and knows it?

If he is not there I would make sure he knows and that you are not just being picky but that they are causing real actual damage that cost $$$ like the fence and also $$$ in time spent getting the cattle back where they belong.

You're not being a meany sis. Contact someone in charge of this group and let
them know what's going on. If ya'll have hired them, they should be doing what
you want them to do and to respect your property!

send them a bill. make sure you have your contract on what you are to be paid.
make sure you get copies of what they deliver to whomever they are delivering your wood, so you can validate they are actually paying you what they are supposed to.

if they dont pay you, slap a lean on the business. That is what they would do to you.

Thanks guys... Don is such a gentle soul, which I appreciate more than I can say until something like this happens. I'm our worrier and sometimes I'm a hot-head but this time I'm thinking not...

I am calling the owner now to discuss how he plans to make up the missed payment. Our contract is for every Friday but he told Don his guys were hurting after rain kept them out for 2 weeks... The problem, in my opinion is that the 'told' Don after he had spent our money (and we are talking thousands here)... he did not ask and he did not communicate in advance.

In addition to that I will be outside as they come through tomorrow to look each one in the eye and remind them that I expect each gate to be closed every time they go through it. I've told several and asked them to pass the word but evidently that is not working.

The cows and calves they let out this morning are all registered and have a value of over $25K... NOT something we can afford to lose. One of the calves is only two weeks old and could have easily been separated from her momma and taken by coyotes... We back up to hundreds of acres of woods and where the woods end not a soul knows us or our cows...

The Lord was watching over my animals and the cows wandered up on the property of the only folks we know back there and they called. I know many people who have lost cows in the woods and never seen them again. Thanks be to a merciful God. I am beyond relieved.

Thanks for the reassurance that I am not being a hag about it.

You can always shoot your rifles in the air, get them to talk with you and then why may even get law enforcement involved themselves if you seem to behave like one of them people that are really from Florida and who can trace their Florida roots alll the way back to Saint Augustine! :)

I would use the term I've herad use to describe people with long Florida roots, but I don't know if you know it, heard it, or use it and I don't wish to offend.

You won't offend me for sure bro. My husband has deep south Louisiana roots and I know the term for that, LOL.

I am starting to picture myself going all Granny Clampitt on them!:girlytantrum
