Disabled My Facebook Accout
Bout a week ago I did something that I had been considering doing for some time now...I disabled my Facebook account. My wife disabled hers and I did as soon as I found out.I had been bothered for a while about how Facebook had turned friendship from an active experience into a voyeuristic passive thing where people feel close but don't have to invest into an actual relationship. The second reason was the need for healthy boundaries. My mother is a very sweet person....but she's got some boundary issues....she's the type that will just unload a whole litany of personal things on you without even really knowing you..well my wife wasn't really prepared for that so it kinda freaked her out understandably. So yeah...there were some boundaries that are needed...the only thing is my mom is a bad facebook addict and she pretends that facebook is the only method of contact so since we deleted our accounts she's been contacting friends trying to "check up on us"...its really gotten annoying because we haven't cut all contact by any means just facebook but from her reaction you would think we changed our names and number and moved to some undisclosed location in the dead of night...anyways...anyone else have similar experiances on facebook?

Re: Disabled My Facebook Accout
I have been considering leaving FB but for much different reasons.
I hate their income producing model of having businesses tie in anything you do with them to your FB page. I recently found out that many online newspapers and websites have turned their comments section into FB comments. Drives me nuts because I might want to comment on a particular article but do not think it is important enough to make that comment a FB post to take up my friends time to see. On a minor note the same thing with sweepstakes. I have enjoyed in the past entering sweepstakes but now a lot of companies make the entry requirement a FB "like". You would think a few banner ads on FB but more than earn them enough money. Oh, I also don't respond to any friends who request I meet them someplace or give them some personal data on a calendar through FB because when I have looked at the fine print it usually means you are agreeing to give them access to your personal data. |
Re: Disabled My Facebook Accout
My husband and I decided soon after FB came on the scene, that we did not want to be a part of a that kind of social networking. It has the ability to easily destroy relationships, or take you to the place where you have no relationship at all, but just social messaging, but no face to face contact. I have had many people over the last few years cease to correspond with me, even by email, because you can only "reach" them through facebook. I've missed out on some pictures of family events, and so on, and have been the last one to find out "news" someone first posted on FB instead of calling or emailing or dropping by to talk to talk to you.
Yet, we are very, very thankful we chose this road, because we have continued to build strong family relationships, and keep in touch with our families in the traditional way and have not had to be part and parcel to a lot of the nonsense that does happen with FB. Just my thoughts on the matter.... :) |
Re: Disabled My Facebook Accout
Yeah...nobody ever calls me anymore...lol...what's sad and funny at the same time is that so many people would come up to me and tell me how funny my posts were and how much I made them laugh but would never invite us to hang out in real life....I mean coworkers or at church it was like a constant stream of people "Oh Brother Will you are just crazy...tee hee hee"....I enjoy being funny and making people laugh but its like "If im so wonderful how come we aren't friends in real life?"I was just providing entertainment without any investment on their part.

Re: Disabled My Facebook Accout
I love Facebook. For some of us it's a great medium to have contact with others. I don't get out of the house, except for trips to the doctor. Y'all are welcome to come see me, or call me though. :)

Re: Disabled My Facebook Accout
I'm not on facebook. It seems so big brotherish. I'm not saying I never will, but it gives me pause to think of joining.

Re: Disabled My Facebook Accout
I enjoy it but ive always used common sense, i dont post my cell phone, address, pics of my house, places that i work, my work/trade listed is very general,i also dont do any games and have them all disabled ,i dont view things that allow apps to access what little info that is personal on there, to be shared and i didnt change to the new time line either just on principle.i also dont tell people what im doing or where im going for security reasons.

I don't do Facebook for all of the reasons people posted above and more.

Re: Disabled My Facebook Accout
I use it quite a bit but if you added all the seconds I am actively reading or posting there it probably comes to 4-5 minutes a day (OK, maybe 10-15 on some days).
And I do not have my birthday or employer open to anyone. |
Re: Disabled My Facebook Accout
Im thinking about getting back on because there have been so many disappointed that I left....its like I seemed to have really cheered them up at times.....*sighs*
