Housewives an endangered species?

Are housewives an endangered species these days?
Shouldn't mothers be home all day?
How does this have an effect on our children?

Somewhat, but there is also a movement underway of more mothers choosing to stay home with their young children.

Putting small children into daycare has many consequences, but in some cases it is better for the child. A lot of qualifiers.

As motherhood/wifehood is an institution
in Scripture, and running the household properly
is clearly defined, it seems like it would follow that
it is under attack.

A biblical wife, congrats!

Do you think if more women stayed at home and families learned to live within their means, more men would have jobs and the unemployment rate will drop?

Proverbs doesn't give present the wife as someone who is at home all day. She is dealing in business, real estate, etc.

But the woman in Proverbs isn't required to toil 8 hours a day either. :)

No, she worked much more than 8 hours a day.

She gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her household
and plan the day’s work for her servant girls. She goes to inspect a field and buys it;
with her earnings she plants a vineyard. She is energetic and strong,
a hard worker. She makes sure her dealings are profitable;
her lamp burns late into the night. (Proverbs 31:15-18 NLT)
