Wondering what 'unbroided' means in the KJV Bible
 

Hello there, I'm new to this website and I've read 1 Timothy 2:9 recently and I'm wondering... The other day, I went to the mall, walked into a hat store. Headbands, as well as hats, were being sold.. I seen a headband that had a big flower on the top of it, it wasn't a small flower but one that would definitely draw the eye.. my question is, Is 1 Timothy 2:9 about not wearing accessories in the hair that is meant to draw attention?
Just wondering, (not wanting to argue or debate)

This passage correlates with 1 Pet 3

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, 6 like Sarah.......

The emphasis was upon adorning your self with gentle and quiet spirit. Peter was not condemning a women for being a women and making herself pretty.

The holy women of old referred to were the Hebrew women. Study them, read your old testament and you will see they adorned themselves with jewelry.

Peter was simply saying, "look ladies, you want to influence your husband to also become a disciple, you won't do it by how fancy you doll yourself up, BUT rather let it be that you ADORN yourself with a godly spirit, humble, quiet, submissive.

The Greek word used there is "plegmah" which means a plait of hair. "plegmah" comes from the root word "pleko," which means to twine or braid.

Not with broidered hair - Margin, “plaited.” Females in the East pay much more attention to the hair than is commonly done with us. It is plaited with great care, and arranged in various forms, according to the prevailing fashion, and often ornamented with spangles or with silver wire or tissue interwoven; see the notes on Isa_3:24. The sense here is, that Christian females are not to imitate those of the world in their careful attention to the ornaments of the head. It cannot be supposed that the mere braiding of the hair is forbidden, but only that careful attention to the manner of doing it, and to the ornaments usually worn in it, which characterized worldly females.
Or gold, or pearls - It is not to be supposed that all use of gold or pearls as articles of dress is here forbidden; but the idea is, that the Christian female is not to seek these as the adorning which she desires, or is not to imitate the world in these personal decorations. It may be a difficult question to settle how much ornament is allowable, and when the true line is passed. But though this cannot be settled by any exact rules, since much must depend on age, and on the relative rank in life, and the means which one may possess, yet there is one general rule which is applicable to all, and which might regulate all. It is, that the true line is passed when more is thought of this external adorning, than of the ornament of the heart. Any external decoration which occupies the mind more than the virtues of the heart, and which engrosses the time and attention more, we may be certain is wrong. The apparel should be such as not to attract attention; such as becomes our situation; such as will not be particularly singular; such as shall leave the impression that the heart is not fixed on it. It is a poor ambition to decorate a dying body with gold and pearls. It should not be forgotten that the body thus adorned will soon need other habiliments, and will occupy a position where gold and pearls would be a mockery. When the heart is right; when there is true and supreme love for religion, it is usually not difficult to regulate the subject of dress.

A lot of people have trouble understanding the culture in which the New Testament was written. The writing style was one of contrast. Those scriptures did not prohibit women from things that make them attractive. They were simply pointing out that outward adornment should not be what makes a woman beautiful. That her true beauty should come from the inside. Freeatlast did a good job in his post of putting these scrptures in context.
