A Glass of Water
I heard a great analogy last Sunday about our relationship with God.
God is like a glass of water. We physically can't survive without it. There are times when we thirst for water more than other times. On a stressful day working outside in the heat or when we've worked up a sweat, we long for that fresh glass of water. When we work inside in the comfort of air conditioning with all the modern day conveniences, we don't long for water so much as our minimal thirst is contained by other watered down liquid byproducts such as sodas, coffee, juices, etc. In fact, we can survive for a long period of time with man-made liquid products without drinking a simple glass of water. This is like our spiritual life. We seek God more when trouble comes into our life, or when we have hit rock bottom and realize that we need God to pull us out of a hole. When our life is going well and we are being blessed, we often don't seek God as much, as we appear to be handling our affairs on our own. Since we are comfortable, we don't desire that pure glass of water like we do when a storm comes into our life. A lot of truth in this analogy! We may not realize it, but when we ask for God to bless us and draw us closer to him, we may be asking for two opposing requests! |
