It's Official, Bush Tortured

Quote:

An independent review of the U.S. government’s anti-terrorism response after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks reported Tuesday that it is "indisputable" the United States engaged in torture and the George W. Bush administration bears responsibility.

The report is the product of a two-year study based on evidence in the public record. It was conducted by a bipartisan task force of 11 experts from a broad range of ideological perspectives and professions. The Constitution Project appointed both former Republican and Democratic policymakers and members of Congress, retired generals, judges, lawyers and academics.

Among them was co-chairman Asa Hutchinson, who was President George W. Bush’s undersecretary for border and transportation security at the Department of Homeland Security from 2003 to 2005. The other co-chairman was former Rep. James R. Jones, a Democrat.

The former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations under President George W. Bush, John Bolton, called the report "completely divorced from reality" and stressed that the procedures were "lawyered, and lawyered again, and lawyered again."

"The whole point of the Bush administration’s review of the techniques was so that no one would be tortured," he said. "The intention was precisely the opposite."

Where is General Patton when you need him? War is what it is - war.

How can the US government then presume to criticize or judge other nations for the same behavior?

We are a lot more civilized than other nations. But, we will have to meet brute force with brute force. We should never engage in a war without the intent to win. And we need to make sure we are going in for the right reasons, which, I don't believe we have always done.

We shouldn't. In any war the letter of the law is not followed. I don't think it's possible to do that. I do not in any way support torture.

You are so right.

What I'd like to know is......let's say we captured a terrorist on our soil who knew where a nuclear devise was that was going to detonate in 24 hours. Are some of you telling me that it would not be justifiable to use whatever means possible to extract that information from him, including threatening his family? Again, I'm ASKING, not declaring, so save the sermons.

I ask the same question. If you knew that the suspect in front of you had information that absolutely would save countless lives....? What might go through your mind as a human being. Again, just asking.

i'm not only talking about judging others in a general way. what if other countries had american prisoners. how can we be an advocate of human rights for their protection or use human rights violations as a justification for invasion if we act the same way? this report should launch an official investigation with criminal charges.
