the law says 501s should be "exclusively" social welfare organizations. irs regs say orgs should be "primarily" social welfare orgs. irs regs are not in compliance with federal law. tea party orgs should never have been approved for tax exempt status. there is no issue here.

MSNBC is more partisan and opinionated than any other cable news. The Pew report documented that only 15% of their news is fact, the other 85% is their own biased opinion.

Lawrence O'Donnell is your source!? Really? You may as well have linked Obama as the source.

See, the problem (besides using MSNBC and O'Donnell as your source) is there was a scandal, it's not bogus no matter what your source says. Media Matters, a liberal org whose openly stated mission is to wage guerilla war against FoxNews, enjoys that status, as do hundreds of other liberal groups.

Come back when you have a credible source and a better argument.

DM, Please note that Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission was a landmark decision by the Supreme Court in 2010. The decision cleared the way for many corporations and labor unions to file for tax-exempt status, allowing for the raising and spending of unlimited amounts of money.

It shouldn't surprise us that soon after the ruling, many filed applications for 501(c)(4) designation. In fact, the applications doubled.

What is a scandal is that during the IRS hearings six groups testified. Before the hearings the Republicans asked Democrats to produce their witnesses - no one came forth - not one liberal group was targeted.

Further, to say there is no scandal when National Organization for Marriage was targeted and their DONOR LIST was given to the Human Rights Campaign, WHICH is an organization in direct opposition to NOM. A computer forensic investigation showed the leak came from the IRS. Shameful!

They had a legal right to keep their donor list private as their members had been targeted in the past when their names were revealed.

Our Free Speech should not be hindered by threats, boycotting and harassment.

It is a huge scandal and I am not surprised that O'Donnell is trying to divert attention away from it. I still believe you like to yank our chains more than you believe this deceitful drivel.

PO and NDavid, I am not going to spend hours of precious time scouring the internet to find an article just to win an argument on this forum that maybe 20 or 30 people read every day. attacking msnbc is not addressing the information odonnell provided. I am not sure of the technicalities between that citizens united case and the 501c4 law and neither am i going to investigate, but i think odonnell raises a serious issue and i wanted to share. a little chain yanking never hurt. just to let you know there is an opposition responding to all this scandal nonsense. nsa spying is much more of an issue in my view but you won't see repubs go after that.

Sadly, it WILL come down to us having to defend ourselves from the physical violence people like him will try to inflict on us. We're past the point of no return.

To people like DM, anything conservative should be not afforded the same rights as liberal America hating leftists. The fact is, liberalism is destroying this country, and even some liberals are seeing this, and changing their views. DM has a problem with conservative groups getting the tax exempt status, but seemingly not the liberal ones who were pushed through on some sort of fast track. Shows, once again, that liberalism is indeed a mental disorder.
