I'm speaking of the adjective and not the noun.

I was in my bosses office one day discussing issues with a large customer of ours. I said "The real problem is their process engineers- you know engineers, they are all anal retentive" At which point my boss pointed to the wall beside the chair I was sitting in. On that wall was his engineering degree. LOL

mainly it makes me image a butt, and things associated with butts. it ignores that

Based on the definition of anal I would say that it is not for polite company, although it is widely used at this point in time... Of course so is the 'f' word.
