Thank God for each trial or through each trial

I was told that I should thank God FOR each trial - even if there is abuse, a death of a child - anything. I know that there are verses that this pastor (not my pastor) used to back up what he said. Please give input. I can understand praising God through/during a trial as abuse, murder of child, etc. but NOT FOR these trials. I point blank asked the pastor if I was supposed to thank God for abuse, the death of a child, etc and he said, "Yes" that I would be strengthened and it would show my faith in God in all things." (Or similar words).... Please expound on this thought, pastors, or anyone, as to how you teach or view this. Thanks.

The Bible does not teach this we are to give thanks IN ALL THINGS not for all things.

Read this. 1 Thess. 5:18

1Th 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

No one in their right mind is "thanking God" for abuse or the death of a loved one.

Paul didn't say to be thankful WITH ALL THINGS, but IN.

BIG difference.

In the mist of losing a child, abuse or anything else, we still can be thankful for God's comforting Spirit, His abiding strength, His closeness during the trial and still not be happy about the situation.

Jesus wept for Lazarus.

He thanked the Father for hearing Him (not for killing Lazarus)

Did Our Father really kill Lazarus?

I'd say He allowed Lazarus to die. He could have stopped it but He didn't do it, anyway! He used this circumstance for the glory of His name

So Our Father was culpable in the death of Lazarus?

I agree with Imreedemed. Read John 11:4, 11-15, 41-42

Quote:

This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe;

And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
John describes the scenario as Jesus allowing it to happen; He could have gone straightaway to heal Lazarus, but chose to linger specifically "for the Glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified.
