Has anyone ever took Acyclovir?
 

The doctor prescribed 5 tablets a day 800 mg ...taken all at the same time...Is this normal?

I do not have nay breaking out but he said it is shingles?

I have seen the commercials but I have never been prescribed that medicine.

seems like a lot...5 pills at a time...but I am no doctor..

Sis Alvear, about 10 years ago I awoke with a headache, as if someone had hit me in the head with a hammer. The next morning, I awoke with the same headache, but also a small "boil" like on my right cheek. Off to the Dr who prescribed steroids; beginning with massive dose reducing gradually over about a 10 day period. The headache went away rather quickly after I began the regimen, and 2-3 days later the "boil" dried up & disappeared. The Dr told me that it was Shingles, but having "caught" it at the earliest stages I was able to ward it off and had no reprecussions. I don't recall the name of the meds, only that they worked.

For shingles, 800mg is the standard dose. In fact, the doctor could prescribe 800mg every 4 hours for about 10 days to knock down that shingles outbreak.

I take Acyclovir for cold sores occasionally. No side effects. I don't take that many at a time though.
