"Put away sin..." ??

For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
Hebrews 9:26 KJV

What does put away sin in this text mean to you?

Great question.

The putting away of sin.

Heb 9:26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world (AGE) hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
Heb 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
Heb 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

This is speaking of being done as a past thing in verse 28. This has to be referencing the cross. He put away or cancelled sin, (The reproach, the penalty) at the cross through His blood.

So if he put away sin is it impossible for us to be a sinner?

No, the idea of putting away sin would be in contrast to just the rolling ahead of sin that existed before the cross.

Yeah but didn't he put it away once and for all?

For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one: for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren,
Hebrews 2:11 KJV

Wouldn't that make it impossible for us to be sinners?

Sin is put away in the sense of Atonement. On the day of Atonement sins were laid on a 'scape goat' who 'bore away the sins' out of the camp, symbolically putting away sin from the congregation. Christ did this once for all (a one time offering).

IN CHRIST, there is no sin, one is not a sinner. But, the key is to get in Christ! If you have been baptised into Christ you have put on Christ. If you have been baptised into Christ you have been baptised into death - buried with him by baptism into death, that like as he was raised from the dead you should walk in newness of life.

And the putting away of sin does not mean just the penalty of sin, nor just the guilt of sin, but also the power of sin, in fact the existence of sin. Therefore, one who is in Christ is freed from the penalty and the guilt and power and the presence of sin.

But if a person is NOT in Christ, then they are still in their sins - they still carry the guilt and penalty of sin, are under the power of sin, and sin is present in their life. The Atonement does a person no good if they are not in Christ. Just as the Atonement under the old covenant was meaningless for heathens outside the covenant.
