Do you RV?

I am curious if any of our AFF members own a motorhome, trailer, or 5th wheel? If you do what is it and how much do you use it?

As I near retirement age in a few years I have been doing research and planning for most likely buying a Class A motorhome or 5th wheel for my wife and myself to travel a few months out of the year seeing the USA and Canada.

I would love to hear your experiences Rving!

We have a 37' class A motor home. We spend a lot of time at local lakes here in North Arkansas but don't use it for long trips. I fish a lot and the kids are home-schooled so it works out that we camp mostly during the months that public school is in session. We like the peace and quite. It's plenty of room for my wife and myself with the two little ones. All the emeneties of home and literally takes minutes to set up. We've owned many bumper pulls and 5th wheels over the years but this is by far the best and easiest to use and own. 7 mpgs but wouldn't do much better in a truck pulling a heavy camper. You'll love it!

Having actually lived in an RV I wouldn't even blink or look up from what I'm doing if every RV on the planet just disappeared.

Assuming the people inside got left behind, of course.

The 5th wheels we are looking at are very heavy duty "full time" ones so we would be pulling with a one ton diesel dually. I have heard you can get around 12-13 mpg but wold not be surprised at less.

My dream since childhood is to own a Class A motorhome but for what we want to do the 5th wheel makes more sense. A big 41'-42' one with five or six slides is pretty much like a nice apartment with the slides out. We would park in a spot for a month or more and explore the area in the truck. However my wife has really bad restless leg syndrom (I now call her problem restless body syndrome as she has nerve issues from two back surgeries that affect her all over) and I pointed out to her the other day shen she had an attack of it while on a short trip in our car that with a motorhome she would be able to go in the back and lay down, etc where pulling a 5th wheel she will be trapped in the cab of the truck until we stop.

We had a 39 ft Cardinal 5th wheel. Don't remember the weight but I had a 2011 Ram 3500 one ton 4x4 that I pulled it with. Maybe it was just the brand of camper that was so heavy, but it still threw that heavy truck all over the road. Not fun to pull at all. And that particular truck got 12-13 mpgs when I wasn't loaded and probably 7-8 when loaded.

Actually the Estate edition of the Forest River Cardinal is one of my favorite 5th wheel's and at the top of my list. The front living floor plan. With the Estate version you get 8,000 lb axles rather than the 7,000 lb ones most 5th wheels come with.

LOL!!! I get it. That is one reason if I do it then it will be with a very large unit, either motorhome or 5th wheel, that will feel more like a small apartment than an RV. 40+ feet long.
