I finally went and did it

Yes, it's true. I joined a gym!

I need to lose some weight. 30 years old. 6 feet tall, about 255.

I've always been active enough with basketball, football, softball, bike riding etc, to not have to go to the gym. Lately however, my bad eating habits have been catching up with me, and I'm determined to do something about it.

I've never been a dieter. Those people always seem to put back on the weight much faster than they lost it.

I'm probably going to start by working out in the mornings at least 3 days a week. I must admit, I've never been a gym member so it's all new to me. Any suggestions would be helpful. I need cardio, but I can't run on a treadmill for very long because of 3 ankle surgeries.

I'm never going to be a meal planner. Our lives are too hectic for that. However, I have been trying to eat better by cutting out sugar (no soda), drinking more water, eating less bread and more protein (beef or chicken).

My lunch is usually on the go, so I grab a snack at the gas station or taco bell. Does anyone have any tips for eating (reasonably) healthy at those places? Breakfast this morning was a monster slim jim with two bottled waters.

You should see a drop in weight just by getting rid of the sodas. They are a absolute enemy to weight loss.

Buy a good scale and log your weight. I have found that even for people with a healthy weight as we get older, it is good to keep track of weight fluctuations. EB, says that it is hygenic to excercise and I can concur with that. I would add that it is hygenic to manage your meals. Most people eat when they are hungry and until their filled, and that is fine for people who live in a third world country where they have limited food sources. Americans have too much at our disposal and we must discipline ourselves it we are going to be healthy.

You can do it!

thank you!

The wife and I went to the gym last night for the first time. We did 45 minutes of cardio for our first session (bike and tread mill). Tonight, I'm going up to start lifting with free weights.

I've been pretty successful cutting out grains and sugar. Been snacking on beef jerky and nuts. Breakfast has been 2 hard boiled eggs with a little salt.
