Are Beards The Mark Of The Beast?

I've been going to the Kentucky District campmeeting of the UPC the last few nights. They have a space apart where they sell UPC books. I noticed one called, FACIAL HAIR by a guy named L. Chancey Gore.

Page 35 Paragraph 1

Quote:

At one time the moustache was viewed as the mark of the beast. In the new court and (so far as I know) through England, in the middle of the last century was said to be the mark of the beast. While the Bible provides no support for this premise IT IS EASY TO TRACE THE ASSOCIATION OF FACIAL HAIR WITH THE DEVIL AND EVILDOERS.
The latest publishing of this book is 2007. It is being sold right along with books by David Bernard. The General Secretary of the UPC Jerry Jones is the featured speaker of these meetings. I am assuming this is a book the UPC wants to be bought and studied.

Reading it last night was truly shocking. Their teaching on it is far worse than I have heard produced on this Forum.

The praise and worship have been a blessing both nights. The testimonies about Missions are edifying. The preaching seems pretty shallow and laced in showmanship unfortunately.

Then as Christianity slowly spread northward once more it appears to have brought with it the habits of the Latin people and in an insidious indefinable way shaving became characteristically Christian and the beard and moustache something very like THE MARK OF THE BEAST.

While the clean shaven face is most fitting and becoming of the Christian man, to think that facial hair would be like the literal mark of the beast may be somewhat extreme. However it seems the author was merely trying to make a point that facial hair was looked upon as something VILE, DOWNGRADING, AND UNWARRANTED for the Christian men of that day.
So the author pulls back a tad bit from saying a beard is the literal mark of the beast to saying it is VILE AND DEGRADING.

Probably trying to get rid of what's left in stock. The book is 20 years old.

Throughout history it has been observed that witches and wizards wore beards. Women unfortunate enough to grow beards were regarded as witches. Witches were well known to have black tuffs on their chins. Have you ever seen a picture of the DEVIL without a vandyke beard and moustache?
Have YOU ever seen a picture of JESUS CHRIST where HE did not have a FULL BEARD?

Mr. Gore seems to be wanting to scare people into thinking if one has a beard they are probably a witch.

Why was it not banned long ago? One would assume since they are selling it within a foot of books by David Bernard, and since the General Secretary of the UPCI is present in the meetings they feel it is good for their people as a teaching tool.
