How do evangelists get paid?
I’ve always pondered, how do evangelists (circuit preachers) get paid? Does the hosting pastor offer an amount? Per service? Per hour? If people get saved? Does the evangelist have a set rate? Or is it based on offerings collected during the revival? |

We paid them a predetermined amount. Sometimes, offerings covered this number and sometimes it did not.

Just depends on the host pastor. Many will pay per service. Some will just give a weekly check for extended revivals. I have heard of paying per baptism but only in horror stories. I've also heard of evangelists demanding a certain amount, but again only in horror stories.

Some speakers do have set fees. We never paid eyebrow raising amounts for speakers.
Finances were controlled by the church board, not by the pastor. I was treasurer, so we discussed speaker fees along with all other parts of the budget. |

Around here evangelist will receive about $1000.00 a week which is typically 4 services and as many love offerings as we can bless them and their family with. We even have a little fun with it and give their children "bubble gum money".

Our policy was to pay the predetermined amount. The offerings helped cover the predetermined cost. Offerings were not a bonus of any kind.

We basically paid them whatever their going rate was, just like most business organizations pay special speakers, trainers, or motivational speakers for seminars. There was normally a set amount determined by the speaker to book them on the schedule. Offerings were often collected to recoup the cost of the evangelist, and it wasn't uncommon to set aside a hearty gift out of the offerings just to say thank you. And yes, sometimes we just couldn't afford a given evangelist. Some would come if in the area for a service or two, and collect whatever offerings we were able to collect to say thank you. When they did this it was a treat because they were being very generous, seeing that their time is money and that scheduling can be a bear if they are in high demand.
It's really all above board. Any special speaker (religious or not) has their going rate based on demand and their availability. |
Re: How do evangelists get paid?
We have a minimal base salary and it is per service. Then we consider other factors that may cause the base to fluctuate. We also make sure their room and board is provided and that they never have to buy their own meals during the tenure of the revival. If they fly in, then the church is responsible for their transportation. If they drive a long distance, we make sure to pay them extra to compensate for their travel expenses.
