Warning to deer hunters
|
Re: Warning to deer hunters
The CWD epidemic has spread to over 20 states. Once it is in the soil, it can migrate via the root structure of plants like alfalfa. If a sick deer urinates on vegetables, some of the prions will stick to the surface of the plant.
It begins with deer. But it contaminates other plant materials that human eat. CWD is a huge problem for natural resources guys, and for big agriculture. |

Re: Warning to deer hunters
I normally try to live by the mantra that God spoke to the Israelites when they were fighting to possess the promised land, "fear not, neither be afraid", but I have to admit, this causes me to not want to hunt as much. It kind of taints the whole experience for me. I know I can get my deer checked for CWD, but it is some more trouble.

Re: Warning to deer hunters
Studies were done by Wisconsin DNR. Deer carcasses are moved all over the state during gun deer season. By quartering deer in the field, it limits the risk of transmission of CWD via carcasses.
The entire issue of disposal is complicated. Some counties do not have the proper setup for disposing deer carcasses. Adams County, where I live does. DATCP is of the opinion that it is 20 years too late to control CWD. DNR sees value in controlling the disease. I like venison. The CWD hotspot in our county is not near where I hunt. But getting tested is the new policy for our house. Testing is free. The number of hunters in Wisconsin is on decline due to a cultural shift away from outdoor activities. CWD does not help nurture the hunting tradition. |
Re: Warning to deer hunters
Interesting stuff.
My 10 yr old shot 2 deer this year, and I shot 2, so we have our freezer full. CWD isn’t in our area, but I’ve heard news on it from time to time. Was told these rock or salt lick blocks can spread the disease w multiple deer licking on the same block. I will look into getting deer tested in the future. I know nothing about it, but looks like it’d be a good idea. I’ll contact my local conservationist and ask some questions... |
Re: Warning to deer hunters
Wisconsin DNR will test any deer for CWD for free. Not sure how other states handle it.
