Any car mechanics in here?

My grandmother recently took back a car that was “sold” to one of my aunts. My aunt never paid for the car.

I had forgotten about this car’s existence until a week ago. So, I “encouraged” my grandmother to take it back. :lol If it doesn’t need a million dollars worth of repairs I’m going to purchase the car.

My grandmother’s mechanic picked up the vehicle yesterday. He’s going to check it out today.

The car sat for 4 or more years. It needs a starter and new tires. I think the gas tank needs to be dropped, old gas removed. All fluids drained and replaced.

What am I missing?

Oil change, fresh gas, hot battery, coolant, rest of the fluids. drive it like you stole it!

Any car that sits a long time is supposed to have the oil drained out before the sit. The big issue can be the engine seals. Not a mechanic, but familiar a bit. If they get rotted out, their replacement can be a good $, and there is no workaround.

Also the rotors may rust up if there was moisture, but that is not a big deal to do the brakes if needed. Be careful though when it first moves, that it will also stop.

I would check the potential real value of the car, and chat with a friendly mechanic, before committing much $$. I see you do have a mechanic involved.

If the potential value of the car is $5k you have a lot of wiggle room. If it is $2K, less so.

You really need to change out any parts that are rubber.
Belts, hoses, tires.
As you mentioned, change all the fluids.
Probably and youtube video about what to do, also!

I bought a 1972 four door Impala, had been sitting in a field for 10-15 years.

Put gas in it, primed the carb, jump started it (it had no battery). Fired up. Ran like a champ. I drove it for about six months, no battery (got a jump everywhere I went). Never changed or checked any fluids except to put cheap gas in the tank. Thing was a screamer (beat a Mercedes on 610 one time heheh).

Sold it to a guy for like 300 or something, I TOLD him "don't do anything except put a battery in it and put gas in the tank".

Did he listen? Nope, he changed the spark plugs, wires, oil filter, oil, transmission filter, fluid, gave it a " tune up".

Motor blew up on him within 2 weeks of all the "new work".

When a car is powered by angel breath and Providence, leave it be. :)

So far the car needs a fuel pump.
