Interesting Podcast On Modern Human Sacrifice
Ive been feeling a bit disconcerted about war/violence and the modern churches mindset on such things.
Of the entire incarcerated population worldwide the U.S holds 20% on its own. Kinda bothersome to me when I have been raised to believe that Im in the land of the free the home of the brave. Taking the words of Jesus on face value about how we should treat enemies...its hard for me to justify war/mass incarceration for profit. Endless war and bloodshed as well and an increasingly militaristic mindset from law enforcement has troubled me as well I began to wonder if there was a connection between state sponsored death/torture and pagan human sacrifice and the different forms it took and it looks like Im not the only one making that connection. Look, even if you are a staunch pro cop/military supporter no matter what...listen to this podcast please. Its an extremely eye opening journey that deals with societal "scape goats" and the group catharsis that comes when we focus our anger, frustration on outcast members of society and the work of Christ that turned that paradigm on its ear. |

Also, I wouldn't pair war with incarcerating lawbreakers. If you want to debate whether war is right is fine or whether incarceration for certain offenses is right, that's well and good. But I wouldn't pair the two. The NT is quite clear that there is allowance for governments to set laws and that people are to abide by those laws. I have little compassion for someone who knowingly and willingly breaks the law. Quote:

Government doesn't have a blank check. Out rights were not given to us by the constitution but the constitution recognizes inalienable God given rights. The constitution is there to keep government in check so they do not violate those rights. Are we to obey every government decree? Isnt there a woe to those that call what God calls good, evil and what God calls evil good? What happens when the interests of God and government diverge? Are we violating the premise of what you say the NT says about being obedient to government? I can give you several examples from the old and new testament where people rightfully defied their lawful governments and were right with God in doing so. Gods morality is unchanging and does not change with the stroke of the pen whether passing laws making the immoral legal or passing laws making the moral illegal. The state of our law enforcements attitude is abysmal towards the citizenry. Its a "us vs them" mentality. Just recently there was a story out of Austin Tx where some of this was brought to light detailing the indoctrination of viewing people as less than human and "If I hear you say that you became a cop to help people Ill punch you in the face." There is a very disturbing "warrior mindset" that cops have these days*and hey...Ive read and heard plenty from ex cops and those in charge of training police* that highlight this and explain that mindset in a military soldier vs domestic police...its not good... This isnt a fly by night rant of a podcast. These guys talk about how paganism *greek, roman etc* how they treated their societies cast offs...the marginalized, crippled, mentally ill. These became the scapegoats...they were convinced that when they punished these people as villains...the embodiedment of all that was evil in their society that the people they killed were gods in disguise. They believed this because of the catharsis they felt when shedding that blood...it was such a collective feeling that they literally believed that it was the work of a deity. The podcast goes through history just highlighting the bloodthirsty traditions and then...you see this theme in scripture even though it was bloody it was turning away from human sacrifice. Abraham being told to sacrifice Issac? That was a common thing to sacrifice people and at the last moment God just changes the story and steps in with such an amazing miracle of provision. Pagan deities didnt supply their own sacrifices...it was quid pro quo and it was horrifically demanding...Gods plan was ultimately a 180 of a worldwide practice. So the podcast goes into how those pagan practices of sacrifice were taken over the state monopoly on violence. Mind talking about why you seem so touchy about this topic Ndavid? Not trying to argue...just curious. |
