Assemblies of God & Voting Out Tongues

It's been an issue inside the Assemblies of God denomination concerning speaking in tongues. There was a group of younger ministers that sought to "fight" the long-held doctrinal stance that the baptism with the Holy Ghost is always evidenced by speaking with other tongues. Up until like a decade or so ago, I know the Assemblies of God had their big conference and reinstated the position that a Christian must speak with other tongues in order to have received the Holy Ghost.

It's a requirement for their ministers, evangelists, and for anyone they ordain to have experience the baptism with the Holy Ghost, evidenced by speaking with other tongues. I know a lot of their churches on an individual level have moved away from this position overall. They don't typically place a strong emphasis on the baptism with the Holy Ghost, but tend to align with a more evangelical, semi-charismatic doctrine.

I've heard a lot here recently that the Assemblies of God had "voted out" speaking in tongues. That's where I'm drawing my theory from.

Any thoughts?

Tongues are out of favor with many among them I have heard. It was no doubt desire for the Holy Ghost and the hunger for it that made them the worlds largest Pentecostal org.

If they indeed toss it.....I expect other inferior things will be accepted.

From the moment we left the United Pentecostal Church 16 years ago, we walked into an Assembly of God church and the AG churches we have been part of they have been very Pentecostal. I can not speak for every AG pastor, but the ones that I know personally do not or will the ever reject the initial evidence doctrine. It is still part of our 16 fundamental truths and has never been removed or had to reinstated.

I also know that almost every kid and youth that come back from kids and youth camp in the Penflorida district comeback having been Baptized with the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues.

As Navy said one cant speak for every Pastor. A few years back I saw a study that said only 24% of AOG members speak in tongues. Its not as big an issue with them as when they first started. After all to them....its not a salvation issue.

I read years ago in an article that only about 10% of the AG constituents as a whole have spoken in other tongues.

Like many 'Pentecostal churches, there is a broad diversity of beliefs. I met an AG pastor in Mentor, Ohio, in the 90's that held an unbelievably high holiness standard. His assembly, at that time, appeared to be more Apostolic than many Apostolic churches. He was in a definite minority, but it was a very pleasant experience meeting and knowing him.

My mother was married to a man a few years ago that was raised in a Holiness Baptist congregation where his father pastored. They were fairly strait-laced with their views on modesty and separation. His parents were very nice people, and if you saw them, you would think they were mature Apostolics.

All the Assemblies of God churches in my area have left any kind of outward standard and have moved increasingly away from their Pentecostal identity.

When I think about Assemblies of God churches, I often think about the time my cousin attended one. I was talking to her one day, and it wasn't long into the conversation that I realized that she hadn't the slightest idea that she was attending a church that traditionally considers themselves Pentecostal. She said that she had never heard anyone speak in tongues or anything else that could've been deemed "Pentecostal" or "charismatic" during her time there.

She no longer goes there. She now goes to a Nazarene church.

This keeps unbelievers and the unlearned from thinking the church people are barbarians. That is what speaking in an unknown tongue does to the church.

"Angela Eagle, a Parliament member who served as a government minister during the tenure of former Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown, derided the use of prayer for people with unwanted same-sex attraction as harmful. Eagle said it was akin to “being told by faith leaders or your family that you are sinful.”"

One part of me just want to laugh at this :lol
