Mercy Me - Christian or not?
 

I was checking out the Mercy Me website because something about their music just creeps me out ... and there is a section that has a list of questions for each band member ... 2 of those questions ask what are your major musical influences and what is on your Ipod ... amazing that nne of these men have anything on thier Ipods that is in the "Christian" music genre, and all of their influences are also rock, heavy metal and alternative rock ... strange fire if you ask me!

Sorry but I don't subscribe to the theology that I can learn only from christian musicians. If that was the case all my music would sound like 70-80's pentecostal music. I'm influenced by many types of genres and artist and please don't question my Christianity for doing so, thanks!

That bothers me too. Whats wrong with using Petra or David and the Giants as influences? But maybe they were not exposed to groups like this?

Hate to bust your bubble, but I don't have only Christian music on my "Ipod" either. Actually, my Treo. But I do take the songs that have bad lyrics or messages and toss them. The others may find their way onto my listening list. Nothing wrong with some good ole 60's, 70's and maybe even some 80's music to get yer blood pumpin from time to time!!

I listen to everything from Led Zep, Eagles, The Who, Yes, Clapton, etc and Third Day, Toby Mac, Mercy Me, Chris Tomlin and a plethora of other Christian artists.

Music doesn't sanctify the message...it is the other way around, IMO. A lot of it is personal style anyway. I am a high driving type "A" so my music tends to jam quite a bit. However, I can mellow out and worship on my "face" as well.

It does bother me some that there are those who feel that in order to be worship, it has to be 440 Volt jukin' and jivin' and jumpin and rollin and falling and runnin etc music. I can jump and jive with the best of 'em, but actually, for me, my best times are in contemplative awesome worship songs which bring tears to my eyes and bring me to my knees.

I agree with what most have posted....it is not necessarily wrong to listen to music other than christian that does not have bad lyrics or messages.

My father asked me to do a concert at his work on my classical guitar and I was going to play some James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot and Jim Croce! (We had to cancel the concert, because they were having some troubles with one of the people that donated money trying to run around and tell everyone else what to do, even though they did not have the authority to do it. I practiced those songs for an entire WEEK...only to have that happen...LOL!)

But guess what? NONE of those guys I mentioned are christian artists! But it was the type of setting in an art gallery that they wanted some older music that everyone knew by just playing the chords...like "fire and rain" for example by James Taylor.

The manager was amazed that I knew those older songs and could play them. But what she didn't know, was that I grew up with those songs on the radio in the 1970's when they came out! (though I was not playing guitar back then)

And that included Led Zepplin, The Eagles (which were my favorite secular band) and a lot of others. I used to have reservations about even using distortion on my guitar in church when I first was baptized with the Holy Ghost, but times change.

I do not think you can ("fruit inspect" ...not judge) a persons spirituality by music they have on their ipod.

Though I do have a lot of gospel music and know a lot of older gospel songs...I also know a lot of secular music and can play it also. That used to make me feel like I should just try to forget about that side of my life, but God has given me a peace about my past and now I can incorporate some of what I have heard into my playing now. And still use it for God.

I have done all kinds of hammer on's, string bends and other things on guitar that years ago, I would never have even attempted because it was just not the thing to do in church.
