What Did Jesus Mean??

When Jesus stood and quoted the O.T. (Luke 4:18) saying that He had come to set the captives free, to heal the brokenhearted, etc......

What did He mean by being anointed to preach the gospel to the poor.

I had always thought the gospel was the death, burial & resurrection, but Jesus couldn't have preached this, because it had not happened until He had gone. The gospel here sure couldn't have been repentance, baptism and Holy Ghost, because that had not happened either.

Did He mean that He had come to preach that the Kingdom of God had come to earth? What did He mean by Him being anointed to "preach the gospel"?

Gospel = "Good news"
It seems the word has gone through a metamorphis and doesn't mean good news in some circles. The "gospel" for some is a list of steps or a series of hoops to jump through. But with all the bad news bombarding people today I think it would be good to go back to the simple and original meaning of the word and declare there is some good news for whosoever will.
Sin? Good news, it's covered! Curse? Good news it's broken! Death? Good news, it's defeated!

THE GOSPEL OF THE BEATITUDES. Blessed are the poor, meek...etc This gospel was different from the "gospel" of the law.

Hmmm......good thoughts to think on. Thanks!

I believe the idea comes from the fact that the "acceptable year of the Lord" is an allusion to the YEAR OF JUBILEE. When the fiftieth year arrived, year of Jubilee, the POOR in Israel, who had to sell their lands to survive financially, received their lands and properties back again. All servants were set free (Israelites who had to sell their services, not as slaves, but servants), as well.

Yes, sir!!

Colossians 1.19-20: Through Christ "God was pleased...to reconcile to Himself ALL things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of His cross."

Gospel means good news. Jesus DID in fact preach and teach the death, buriel and resurrection, but not as prominently to the public. He taught it to his disciples who would carry on His ministry

What a great subject for discussion, Sherri!! I agree with all the above posts.

In Genesis 1:26, God made a covenant with Adam in which He gave mankind dominion over "all the earth". Under this covenant, God could very little in the earth unless it was spoken by some man/kind.

That's why Enoch spoke the flood. That's why Abraham spoke that God would provide Himself a sacrifice. That's why Isaiah spoke that Jesus would be born of a virgin. That's why we have to speak and ask God to do His will in the earth, just like it is in heaven. That's why we have to speak and ask the Lord of the harvest to send forth laborers in to His harvest. That's why everything Jesus would do had to be spoken by a man/kind.

So here was Jesus, in Mat 3:13-17, the only begotten Son of God. He had just turned thirty years old and even though He was the Son of God, He had done no miracles, had opened no blind eyes or deaf ears, turned no water into wine. Why not? He had not been anointed to do those things yet. Isaiah spoke in Chapter 61:1 saying He would be anointed to do all those things. His baptism in water by John and His Spirit baptism by God was Jesus' anointing. (Acts 10:38)

Jesus was immediately led into the desert, where He endured temptation for forty days and nights. There He defeated the devil using the Word of God. He then went to Nazareth and read Isaiah 61:1 in their synagogue on the sabbath day. He then proclaimed that He was the Anointed One (Christ). He fulfilled Isaiah's prophecy by proclaiming the Good News (Gospel) that the poor don't have to be poor any more, the broken heart is healed, the prison doors are open, and the captives can walk out free, the blind eyes are opened, the abused don't have to be abused anymore, and this is the year that God accepts mankind just as he is.(Lk 4:21) He isn't mad at us anymore. The angels proclaimed to the shepherds at Jesus' birth: "Peace on earth, good will (Gospel) toward men".(Lk 2:14) God is not mad at mankind anymore, because of the work that Jesus would do.

Now that's Good News!!

Jesus was bringing Good news because after His crucifixtion the NT. church would start and men could be cleansed by the shed blood of the Lamb.
It was good news because it meant the Kingdom of God was near it was coming soon.
The Kingdom of God was coming spiritually and mankind could experience rebirth and be apart of this Kingdom.
