If You Were the Opposite Sex
 

The pastor at the church I attend started a series today called "Putting Women in Their Place" (finally lifting them up instead of putting them down!). He said that when he was going through seminary they did an exercise in a class and the teacher said "Pretend you are the opposite gender" and then they had to discuss this in small groups. The pastor said "I spoke first and I said that I realized that I would have to leave the church I was attending." He said this exercise hit him hard because he had been somewhat ambivalent on this issue but this exercise made him realize that he would actually have to leave the church he was attending if he was a woman because all his gifts weren't "supposed" to be had by women. He then realized how difficult it must be for women who do have these gifts to actually use them.

I think it is a great series and I am looking forward to the next sermons. So, how about it? What if you were the opposite gender?

I am and its not easy but Jesus chose the path.I just follow.

Interesting point, but one must assume (if he holds to the no female Pastors view) that the gift is not genuine or God-given.

I knew someone would say that. That is circular logic though. The assumption is that there is no way a woman could even possibly feel what a man feels concerning pastoring or teaching because then God would be going against what He Himself supposedly wrote by giving her those feelings to begin with. A person with this line of thinking automatically dismisses a woman's feelings about preaching or teaching based on his own logic that women are not called to preach or teach. The person assumes that they are right about their interpretations of scripture and therefore invalidates a woman's feelings immediately. This is part of the problem to begin with. A woman's feelings are invalidated before she even begins. So, any woman who might feel the same calling to teach or preach as a man has an uphill battle from the word go. I'm sure Deborah faced many of the same battles, even though many people automatically bring her very important and powerful role down to next to nothing simply because of her gender. Think with me for a moment if a person's views about women not being allowed to preach or teach are actually incorrect and what a battle a woman must face in order to simply hold her head up and do it anyway. When you consider how difficult this really is, it takes much of the glory right off the top from anyone who would claim that some women want to teach and preach because they are power hungry or trying to take the place of a man. There is little glory to being scorned.

LOL! Some men do think all women are stupid but I don't think most do. However, I think there is a Christian myth that women are somehow inferior at least when it comes to being rational and able to think through doctrine.
