I agree with you morally. But we're talking about using the police power of GOVERNMENT to police people's private life choices. My wife left me about three years ago and I've been told that if I remarry I'd be in sin. Of course, that is only one man's interpretation of the texts.
Do you really think that our GOVERNMENT should adopt that man's interpretation of the texts and ban me from remarriage???
Or do I as a sovereign citizen of a free nation have the sovereign right to marry whomever I choose regardless of what some church might think???
