The waste produced by the fish, in the tanks must be cleaned or the fish become toxic and die. So the plants are used to "scrub" the water. the waste become nutrients for the plants, cleaning the water for the fish.

Im not going to ever do it, its pretty labor intensive, but if you are into sustainability for ecological or "prepper" reasons, it is a very solid way to go.

There is a "prepper" family not far from us who are raising Talapia in their swimming pool and using a small veggie garden as their biological filter. This system literally provides more then 90% (and could provide 98) of their food.
