What is "harsh" about burning bridges?
I would think that burning bridges would be when you say, "I am
definitely not coming back" as opposed to "I'm taking a break, but I'll see you later, probably be back", etc. It seems that Thad is saying the former.
Keeping your options open is [almost] always a good idea.
