No it has very little to do with his character, it has to do with fear of being ostracized by family and peers, which by the way is a very legitimate, fear.

And I know several "liberal" pastors who have expressed their wish to get back some of the things they have let go.
But they cannot see how to do it without losing their church.
However, I would not speculate about this on a public forum.
